So what do you farmgirls do to keep the weeds at bay? Some of mine are just as high as the corn...just when I think I'll get something done in that garden something else comes up...I guess that's how it always is! Also I am looking into building a compost box. How should I do this for a faster compost..would really like some for next year if possible! Thanks, Leanne
I have semi weed free areas in my garden. Those are the areas I remembered to mulch as things were goin along. We are usin a mantis tiller and weed eater to reduce and clear all the areas we didn't get to before and that the rain kept us out of later. Hopefully, we'll get caught back up.

Leanne, I have a compost bin. I used to put weeds in it, but have a lot of weed seeds that seem to survive in the composting process. I don't put weeds in there anymore. I usually bag them and take them to my local composting/recycling center now. Mulching does help keep the weeds down. Next year I am doing the square foot gardening with all new soil. There is a recipe in the Square Foot Gardening book on how to make the soil. It should help keep out the weeds. We will see.
we throw our weeds in to the chicken manure compost only. that seems to be the only thing that gets hot enough to kill the seeds. Be sure to layer it so that you have manure on top of the weeds.
