My name is Cathy. I have been lurking on the site for about a week now and thought I would finally introduce myself. I am 39 years old, been married to my best pal for the last 21 years. We have two kids, ages DS18 and DD16. My sons DGF20 also lives with us. We have two fur kids, or grandkids, the dogs really belong to the kids, my husband and I just spoil them.
I homeschool the youngest, my DS and his DGF have finished their schooling. I also work at the local, as in across the road local, primary school as a academic tutor. It is wonderful to walk to work and come home and have lunch with my DD.
We live in a small town in south central Maine. My interests include anything that has to do with homekeeping, gardening, painting, reading, needle crafts (still learning some). I am very interested in being "greener", raising our own food, and in general enjoying the harded, but more simple life and teaching that life to my children.
I can't wait to meet all of you and becoming one of your sisters. BTW any other Maine farmgirls out there?

Hi Cathy! Welcome to the forum from across the country! I'm sure you'll fit right in with all the talented ladies here on the forum and I hope you show us some of your crafts. I love it that you walk to work. I used to have about a 1/4 mile walk to work and it was so relaxing -- even in the snow. Isn't it nice when we have all we need right next to us?

Hi Cathy !
I'm not from Maine, but spent a lot of time there. I still try to visit at least once a year. We usually stay in the Kennebunkport/Wells area. I grew up in Vermont, but now live in the Pocono Mountains of PA. Hope you enjoy the MJF group as much as I do!

Thank you everyone. What a wonderful welcome.
Tina, I am about 25 minutes away from Brunswick. Did you live here long?
Hallie, I love the short commute, it literally takes me 45 seconds to get to work. My coffee doesn't even get cold in January. I have lived here all my life and I still hate driving in the snow. Although it isn't always a safe walk either. :)
Luanne, it has been a few years since I have been to Kennebunkport. Isn't it beautiful there?
Lilly, I have always wanted to go to Williamsburg, especially at Christmas time.
Laila, I already love it here. It feels like home.

Jill, I have only been up north a few times, and that was awhile ago. I have relatives in Island Falls and Sherman Mills I think that is the name. I haven't seen them in a long time. I haven't heard of Stacyville. What is the town like? It must be hard to be torn between two places.
Lin, I remember playing field hockey in Yarmouth back in my youth. Other than that I don't get over that way anymore. They had great weather for the clam festival this year if I recall. Had you ever been to it when you where here?

Tina... We could be. Both sides of my family our from the Lewiston area. I was born there. Both of my parents came from very big families. I am sure that at least some of relatives have met at some point. My husband commutes to Lewiston for work also. Small world.
Lin... I have always wanted to go to the festival, but my family isn't as crazy about seafood as I am. So I may never get there. Oh well. Man I would love some fried clams right now! lol

Ooh Cathy - if you go out for fried whole clams, have a couple for me too - we can't get them down here in PA except occasionally frozen ones. Man, do I miss them!!

Luanne...I certainly will. I know the frozen ones just don't cut do they? I did grab a large order when we went to Popham Beach is summer. They were so good! Is it true that you can't get whoopie pies out of Maine also?

Hi to my Maine Farm sister, I live the next town before Sherman Mills, Stacyville is between Sherman Mills and Patten I live right on rt 11. Stacyville is a very small town if you blink like most towns in Maine you have missed it. I would rather be up in Maine full time if we could sell our house in Ma. Maine is so quiet and not as fast as Ma. Jill Lillian |

Hi Cathy -
Actually, whoopie pies are a staple here in PA - I think they're considered one of the mandatory food groups! I have Amish friends here that I visit often, and whoopie pies are a popular snack with them along with shoofly pie. I'll be in Maine in early October for a few days, so will eat my fill of clams when I get there!
Hope you enjoy MJF as much as I do.

I would love to visit Maine. One of my nephews lived there for a couple years, but I never got to go visit. He sure didn't care for those bitter cold winters though. I always wanted to take the Amtrak in the Fall to see all the leaaves. Wouldn't that be a fun Farm-Girl adventure for a bunch of us Northerners....?? :P I'm drooling! lol Boy there would be some 'tearin-up" on that train! We'd be bleary-eyed from lack of sleep afterward. LOLOL And we'd be broke for a year, but we would have made a memory, wouldn't we? ~hahaha~

Oh, Cathy, the snow up there must be something else. I moved out to a place with snow for the first time in my life just a few years ago. The first winter I had to learn to walk in it and how to put chains on the tires. The second winter I tried biking -- not a good idea. The third winter: bought snow tires. Do you use those strap on spikes for your shoes in the winter? I thought about them last year...

I have some of those spikey-strap things you put on your shoes. I use to walk to work in the winter because it was so close. I didn't need to get the car out of the garage and get it all dirty. So I enjoyed the fresh air and jusy bundled up good. I had an Army arctic parka that my DH gave me one year for Christmas(he's an Army Retiree), and I kept plenty warm. All you could see were my eyes when I was done bundling up! hahaha

Judy, I wish I still worked close enough to walk to work! I just love that crunching sound the snow makes. I guess the spiky things work pretty well.
