The freeze is coming so everyone is out gathering up the last of the year's crops. Lots of tomatoes since they were so late in getting started this year. Winter squash, peppers, turnips, beets and so on. Haven't pulled int eh cabbages or brussel sprouts yet. I heard they can take a freeze. Does anyone know for sure?

Brussel sprouts taste better after a freeze. My cabbages have taken light freezes but not for days on end.

So jealous to read about your beautiful last harvest. I had such a poor growing season this year. I even would have welcomed the heartbreak of harvesting all those gorgeous green tomatoes! Already looking forward to next spring . . . how about you? Does anyone do a seed exchange with their extra seeds? i am a new farmgirl.

Sure if you remind me in the spring I can send you some of the extra seeds I have. I save a lot of the winter squash. This year's harvest was all from seed I had saved last year. I'm working on some peppers too and maybe some tomatoes.
We didn't have a frost this year, went straight to hard freeze at 27 last night. Fall has arrived.

Thanks, I will definitely remind you in the spring for any seeds you might be able to spare. It sounds like you really did a good job saving seed to get such a great and varied harvest. Are you looking forward to spending some time indoors or do you get a bit cabin feverish over the fall/winter?

I am looking forward to changing focus for a while, though that will include work again after the beginning of the year. It's long hours but lets me take more time off than the normal 40 hour work week.
I'm ready to move into the crafting faze, though by Jan I'm usually looking at seed catalogs!

You sound like a very busy woman! I think it is pretty funny how the seed catalogs arrive on your doorstep right when the after holiday doldrums hit. I guess the merchants know their customers will be looking forward to getting a bit of mother nature under their fingernails right about then. I suppose it is the constant looking forward to a change that makes me happiest. Happy crafting to you.

I harvested the last of my garden bounty today. For dinner I had a salad of lettuce and spinach with a few cherry tomatoes, and made some dressing. I felt kind of sad in a way. This year was my first veggie garden ever; it had both successes and failures. I'm already planning for next year--more sugar snap peas (can you ever get enough?), no fennel or carrots; make a raised bed for the front yard. Now I need to put my beds to sleep for the winter. Good-night, garden, see you next spring.

congratulations Prariehawk on enjoying the fruits of your labor. The final harvest and tucking your beds in for the winter is always bittersweet. But the change of seasons keeps me anxious for the next one! Get ready for all the seed catalogs in January! That always makes me so ready to get some dirt under my fingernails.
