We recently moved to a house that is on a pretty little lot with LOTS of large pine trees ( that are so beautiful here). We have a few small areas where we get sun ( from 4 - 6 hours a day) so I have to plan my garden accordingly. For me I am going to use raised beds and lots of containers. I need to figure out a way to maximize every inch of my gardening space.
Are any of you facing the same challange (gardening in a small space)? Do you have any tips on how to get the most veggies from a small space? PLEASE SHARE

Try the square foot gardening by Mel Bartholomew. A Lot of people use this method. He has a book if you could find it at the library.

| I have used square foot gardening and gotten a lot of produce from it. Also there is a book I think it is called roses love tomatoes, or is it carrots??? It is a method for planting things together that benefit each other. |

I'd look into doing succession planting and vertical gardening. With succession planting you will plant seeds of the same plant say, once a week for a month or whatever. Then, when the old plants are spent, the baby plants will take their place and produce for you. Also look into vertical gardening, too :0)

Companion planting mingled with Square Foot Gardening, with some "vertical" thrown in for good measure!!
I totally overplant my gardens- this can be great when it's solid tomatoes for example, and not so great when it's cabbages (don't laugh, Alee!!!). But it's alot of fun either way. Keeps the weeds down!
And speaking of weeds, mulch mulch mulch!!! Don't want to weed? Mulch! Don't want to have to water every 5 minutes? Mulch!!! Mulching is the everloving bomb. I crave other people's leaves in the Fall!! I've considered posting a sign in my front yard requesting drop-offs! but DH says No way! (sigh - men.)
Google "companion planting" and there's tons of great websites and info. Square Foot Gardening books are often available at libraries.
Have fun! How exciting! Your pine trees sound lovely!!!

| Yes, we bought a house and have very little land with a small space for a garden that we will use this year. This past summer I used containers to grow basil (which did very well) and peppers (not so much, a dud really). This coming summer I will pull up the plants that the previous owners planted, in order to have a very small garden. I will have the peppers there but I think keep the basil growing in containers. |
