I love the MJ magazines. A little bit about myself my name is Valerie and I originally grew up in Iowa. About 8 years ago my husband and I moved to Virginia. I like several crafts; stamped cross stitch, sewing, quilting (I am a beginner), embroidery (still pretty much a beginner), and I have tried crochet but can't seem to get the edges straight (so I haven't ever made anything). I have only done container gardening, it worked somewhat last summer. The only thing that worked was the basil (which we made some homemade pesto sauce which was fantastic). Since we purchased a house this summer I plan on removing some plants that were previously planted to make room for a very small garden. I will have to continue with the container gardening for some things as we don't have that much land in south side of the house with the most light. We have one cat and one dog. All of our relatives are outside of the virginia area. Recently I joined a quilting guild and started going back to college. My sister and her husband back in August recently had their second daughter. So I was excited to see all of them then.

Welcome....from another newbie....from Indiana! I am addicted to the magazines and only have gotten 2 so far! Don't give up on the gardening, the best food you will ever eat is what you grow yourself. Herbs are fun and can last through the winter too!
Hope you are staying warm!

Welcome from another Iowan. I still live here! Where did you live in Iowa?? Don't give up on the crochet-probably what you are doing is an increase on your ends when you turn-I used to do this when I started. When you turn make sure that you don't go in the first hole but the second from hook. Also depends what stitch you are doing-single crochet gets a chain 1 before turning-double crochet gets a chain 2 before turning-treble crochet gets a chain 3 before turning. I hope this helps. Email me if you have questions!!

Welcome again!

Thanks, I believe it was the double chain for the crochet. My Grandmother had just started teaching me when we moved several years ago. So I didn't have all of the basics down. Now she doesn't really crochet anymore due to her hands. Every time I got back there are so many people to see or get together for the holidays that I don't get to spend quality time with just her. Most of my family lives in Clarke County, but I grew up in Warren County.

I love looking at the posts. How did I get the "Farmgirl at Heart" under my chatroom name? And what does the yellow star mean? I see others have blue stars. Thanks for your help.

My friend in Missiour gave me a subscription to MJ Farm magazine and I fell in love with it right away. I have been looking at doing the projects to get merit badges. What a great way to spend time inside and learning new things.
