I want to grow a variety of medicinal herbs this year. Truthfully I have no idea what would be most useful though. We don't get sick very often but when we do its the usual, colds and flu. I have sensitive skin so occasionally I break out so a salve I could make would be great. I would like to learn to make our own shampoo bars also.
So with those few things in mind, what herbs would be the most beneficial to grow? (We are zone 4)

Kim,
Here's my basic list, especially if you want to make salve: Comfrey (contain area) Lavender Calendula Peppermint Spearmint Chamomile Nettles (they grow wild for us) Garlic
That should get you started. Have fun & see my blog for more herbal and gardening ideas.

Kristine-
Thanks for the list. Now next question(s), where is the best place to purchase the seeds? Do you have a book you recommend on using herbs medicinally? In my amazon cart I have one from Rosemary Gladstar, Susan Weed and another name that isn't coming to mind. What is your recommendation?

I would be sure to grow either Marshmallow or Horehound as a must have for the colds/flu's comfort- to make your own cough drops. The public schools around here will not let the kids bring in any that contain menthol or a medication but herbs are not on the list/considered medical by them. So i can make these up with those herbs listed and just send them in with my kids. I second the garlic. We eat so much fresh garlic around here that no one gets more then the sniffles. Having 3 kids {5,7,11} in public schools, I am a big believer in the garlic. Mountainroseherbs.com is a very nice place to order medicinal seed from. I am a believer in the thought it is better to know 40 ways to use one herb then to know one use for 40 herbs. The problem I have found with many herbal books is that alot of what they write of, you can not grow yourself or find growing wild around you. You have to BUY the dried herb. For the basic flu's/colds & first aid Herbquilter & my suggestions are a great start. Try to learn as many uses as possible for these.Incorporating the daily ritual of herbal teas into the whole families daily living too. Makes it much easier when you need to make em up a cup while sick. Best of luck to you. |

Rosemary Gladstar's Family Herbal is the best, but I also like 10 Essential Herbs too. I include both in my herb classes.
