Hello Farmgirls!
I'm so excited to finally be a part of this Sisterhood! The happiest moments in my life were at my grandmother's property in Bivins, TX. It's a tiny town (if you can call it that) surrounded by beautiful pine trees. She had a lovely field with rows and rows of vegetables behind the small house she and Grandpa built themselves, with many family members pitching in. Later on, she had chickens.
Her house was my only connection to this "other world" that was so quiet and simple. Where heat came from the big stone fireplace (the entire back wall of the house was lined with firewood). The air conditioning came from the open doors and windows and the ceiling fan in the greatroom that hung above the glass shelves where she grew her African violets.
I long for the life she led, though it was hard work. My husband and I want that life so desperately, especially now when the world is growing ever more complicated. His recent defeat of Stage 4 cancer has brought this need for simplicity into sharp focus. It will be several years before we can realize our dream, but my recent discovery of Mary Jane's Farm was the catalyst I needed to shift from "pipe dream" mode to an actual goal.
I already enjoy beading, counted cross-stitch, and candle-making, but I need to learn skills like sewing, canning and successful gardening in a tough Texas climate. At least for awhile, I'll be a suburban farmgirl, doing what I can within the confines of our small rental home with its postage-stamp back yard.
It will be a challenge, but I plan to rise to it in true Farmgirl fashion. I look forward to getting to know all of your stories! I hope you can share your wisdom with me, as I'm just beginning my journey.

Hi Sharon! I'm a Vermont farmgirl currently, but I grew up in Dallas area. I'm so excited to hear your excitment for this mindset. If you're looking for advice, I would recommend raised bed gardeing for you. You can make the boxes small, and you get the most bang for the space you do have, since you can pack a lot more veggies into deep raised beds. If you want any book recommendations, I have lots! :) Welcome to MJF!

Hi Sharon!
So glad you made your way here. I just discovered MJF last month and just love everything about it. You will have a great time here. I second the raised bed idea. They work great for me. I'm so glad that your husband made it through. Some fresh air and wildnerness can do wonders for the mind, body and soul.

Thank you all for the warm welcome! Times are scary at the moment (I'm a public school teacher in Texas), so this forum couldn't have come into my life at a better time. Time to forget the stress and worry for a little while and get back to what's really important.

Sharon,
Welcome! So glad to have you join us. You will enjoy gardening and raised beds are a great start especially with soil that may not be the best. You will get lots of great advice here and if you are ever lonely or confused . . . someone is always here for you. That has been such a great comfort to me. So glad that you will be able to follow your dream with your husband. I look forward to getting to know you.
I am in Eastern Washington and I love it here. The trees and mountains are so gorgeous and to be able to look out our windows and enjoy such beauty with our favorite animals in the foreground is such a dream come true. I love to do all sorts of crafts, too. And I am really getting itchy for spring!!

Hi Sharon! well, there are a lot of great books, but my favorite is Cubed Foot Gardening. Not to be confused with Square Foot Gardening. Cubed Foot is great for a very laid back approach to the gardening process, and it won't overwhelm you to get started.

Sarah, I will definitely look into that book. "Laid back" sounds great to me at this point, haha. I'm definitely a beginner! I've only had indoor plants that required care.

Your post really touched my heart, and I felt like I could totally relate to your quest for the simpler things in life! I lost my grandfather and father to cancer last year within 7 months of each other. Needless to say it was a rough year, but I feel Blessed to have gone throught that experience because it certainly has shown me what really matters in life, and as you said, put things into a "sharper focus".
So happy to hear of your husbands victory over cancer, and with your bright outlook- I am sure you will achieve your farmgirl dreams in no time at all!

I'm so sorry to hear how cancer has touched your family. :-( It is a horrible thing, not just for those physically suffering, but for those of us who are forced to just watch and wish we could something to help.
