I am in charge of our elementary school garden. I would like to plan an event for the early fall called "Books in the Garden" for our school families. I am thinking of an evening event. I wonder if anyone has participated in anything like this and might have some ideas for me!

Amy- this sounds so sweeet! I dont have any experience with an actual event like this but I was PTA President last year and very involved in my childrens schools for many many years.
As soon as you said a Books in the Garden event in the fall...the idea came to me that perhaps you could do a "Fall/Harvest" theme and have people bring books to "donate' to your "Harvest". You could fill bushel baskets etc with the donated books and either use them for the classrooms and/or library at school OR if thats not a possiblity you could collect them to donate to a local daycare etc. In exchange for donating books to your harvest, the children could visit the pumpking patch (where you could have small "sugar" type pumpkins laid out. Each child can pick a pumpkin to take home as a thank you for their donation. You could play off this in many ways...these are just a few things that came to mind quickly.
There are so many things you can do with a fall theme...GOOD LUCK!

oh thats a great idea...when I was teaching art in high school I did a class on living art & we took our school sign & used it as a pattern for a flower garden...the city kids have never used a shovel or dug in the dirt & planted & tended anything before...it was so nice to see them so protective over their little flower garden.
You didn't say if you actually grow anything in your garden but if you do what about growing fall colored mums in the late summer, just before the event dig up a few put them in plastic pots that are covered with paper your students designed & colored & hold a raffle of sorts...for those who bring books give them a handmade ticket that the students made. if the event is to be say 2 hours long have a raffle every 30 mins & give a pot of the mums to the winner. We all love raffles & this would be something you & the students have grown so it would be real special to the students to know their flowers are going home with someone....Just an idea...Michele'
