Dig deep into your sewing baskets ladies...I'm in need of some ric/rac to use as edging on my flour sack dishtowels. Any color will suffice.

Willing to barter Handcrafted soap or Lavender sachets (with vintage spool quilt applique)

Just drop me a line if you are interested!

Thank you girls I appreciate it!!

Is there a difference CJ? It's been a while since I dealt with ric/rac (what kind of name is that for a sewing notion anyway??) What do you think would work as edging on a flour sack dishtowel? I trust your judgement, but I would need quite a bit I think because those darn things are huge and I have at least a dozen to work with right now until I can find some locally (grrrrrr) I looked most of the afternoon today in town and could not find ANY ric/rac for love nor money. Tell me what you think and what you would like in return dear friend. Any color will do as my towels are done in red-work and I thought what the heck add a little color to edge or at least colors that go well with a nice deep red.

Well, Mel . . .
It's different because jumbo is about 1/2 inch wide and medium is about 1/4 inch wide . . just depends on what look you want. I use both sizes on my aprons. Typically there are 3 yds in a pkg., however I've seen some that only have 2 1/2 yds.

I don't REALLY know why it's called "ric-rac" . . but maybe because it "rics" and then it "racs" . . . like "zigs" and "zags". Only whoever named it that wanted to be more original. Like I said I don't really know but that works for me.

Sounds like Loralie or Joann may be able to get it for you better than I. My resources are VERY limited, but if I find some to spare I'll send it your way!

CJ---Thank you dear heart-You keep the ric rac I know you use it on your aprons-which are absolutely WONDERFUL! I am still searching in the area for some. Maybe Goodwill? I usually see it around, but when you need it you can never find it. Ain't that the way it goes??

Mel,
No Walmart or Joanns in your neck of the woods? I know that a lot of the Walmart stores got their fabric and crafts dept. axed . . ours got reduced to half. I am still able to get SOME ric-rac, but only half the selection they used to have.

I have to stock up when I go to Phoenix to my daughter's . . .go to the Joanns down the street and one big Walmart.
Happy hunting!

They have phased out almost everything even resembling anything to do with sewing here at our local Wal-mart except for bolts and bolts of cheap cotton cloth. I almost cried when they pulled the embroidery floss cabinet. I made a special trip to the store for some floss one afternoon and it was gone! And JoAnne's is in Green Bay about 45 minutes from here. That's okay. We usually go every other month or so to Green Bay and there are two thrift stores here in town so I will keep looking. I have a few leads through the forum here. Thanks CJ!

Also look at Atlanta Thread Company on the web ~ their prices are very reasonable and the service is excellent.

When our Walmart was being "downsized" I didn't realize that ALL the embroidery supplies were being eliminated. I went in for something and learned it was ALL GONE! I looked at the manager and said, "YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING". Unfortunately, it isn't the local staff that make the decisions. I had a conversation about one of the meat dept. employees about that and he was just as angry as I was.

Anyway, our Walmart does still have some good fabric but not as much and the notions supplies?? PATHETIC! Every time I go in there I go get whatever ric-rac and bias tape that I can in the sizes and colors I use. But, again, what they stock is less than half of what they used to. They even cut the fabric cutting table down to 1/4th of what there used to be. We have NO other options within 75 miles. So, I totally understand. Once in a while I find laces and trims at local thrift stores but rarely any ric-rac.

We do have a quilt store but they don't stock notions and the prices on their fabric are WWAAAAYYYY too high . . .
I will probably do some online shopping myself.
You'll get some farmgirl help, I know you will!

I'm not sure if these are good prices for ric rac or not but I found this while ordering some things for my Mom.

CJ....I thought as much when you wanted some of those old ivory keys from my antique piano!

I know my name is different...but for years and years anyone in my family would randomly and I might add... at the most inconvenient of times call me "Moe" especially my older brother. It came about during the summer of the Watergate hearings. I was glued to the TV set completely enamored by Maureen (Moe) Dean---John Dean's wife and hence the nickname stuck.

Thank you so much for taking the time to send me some ric rac CJ.

I know this really has nothing to do with ric rac . . . but the piano I learned to play on was an antique Steinway upright. It had REAL ivory on the keys. There is NOTHING like the feel of real ivory . . . but it wears away and some of the most played keys had well worn ivory.
Then on July 17, 1994 I lost that piano in a house fire (arson) . . . and I cried. My daddy cried . . . my mom would have wept uncontrollably but she was already in heaven then and knew ALL about it.
The keys I got from you and I made into my "Piano Keys Bouquet" remind me of that piano and my history with it and the love I have for music and the piano. It sits on top of the Steinway piano I have now which I bought new after the fire. Our insurance adjustor just about had a heart attack when we told him the replacement cost for that piano.
I appreciate you having antique keys for me to make my bouquet out of!!!
Thanks!

Oh my CJ I didn't know it was arson-What a tragedy and waste.

Did you know that I kept that e-mail photo you sent me of your piano bouquet? It gives me a "warm" feeling to know that what I had in my house is now in yours-brings us closer in friendship even if it is such a small thing.

I get a lot of ric rac for my dolls at homesew.com. They have a variety of colors and the price is pretty decent. If you sign up for a catalog you get a coupon for discount shipping. I don't have any right now. My doll making season starts in about two months.

Hope that helps.

The ric rac you sent me is already on the redwork dishtowels CJ and it's just what I needed to make them "pop!"

Try to get the hollyhocks in they are just lovely. I had them planted all along my white picket fence last year and they were ENORMOUS and when they seed you can harvest those for next year although mine are coming up again without planting--they must be semi-perennial? Bi-annual? Anyway...thank you again for the ric rac CJ--you are a sweetie!
