Dear Farmgirl Friends,
Thought we'd share a few pics and comments about the AVON WALK for BREAST CANCER event we (CJ and Robin - mom and daughter) participated in this year. Some of you may recall the thread/pics we posted last September of the AVON event we crewed in Santa Barbara, CA
This year we crewed the Rocky Mountains event which is in my home state of Colorado. It is held in the Keystone/Dillon/Frisco/Breckenridge area . . . stunningly beautiful scenery. It's a great event and the best venue and is the event we walked in 2009
Setting up "house" in our little pink tent which is provided by the event.

Looking out through the tent door at the big white dining tent and part of the pink "tent city".
.JPG)
Shari, our team leader, and CJ resting up after our setup and before the big crowd of walkers arrive.
.JPG)
Some walkers stopping in our our "QUICK STOP"
.JPG)
Steve, the only guy, on our "posse" team.
.JPG)
As you can see we had a western theme . . .cowboy hats, bandanas, western shirts, etc. What you can't see is all the western tack and equipment we used to decorate our stop. We three "cowgirls" each had our own pink and white cap pistols in cute pink and white holsters. We also had "clicker" pistols on the tables for the walkers to play with.

And, of course, the ponies, PEONY and PETUNIA were right there and were a hit with event staff, crew and walkers. They were POOPED PONIES by the time the 2 day event was finished!!!
.JPG)
Part of the crowd at closing ceremonies. You cannot really appreciate this finale to these events without being there. There are walkers, crew members and staff all around us. It is uplifting and emotional . . .Robin and I always make sure we have tissues when we go to closing ceremonies!!!! For this event it was held right smack dab in the middle Main Street in Breckenridge, Colorado. It was AWESOME!!!
.JPG)
I had the sweet privilege of giving one of the event "Connection Ribbons" to Andrea. She was on the Safety crew on the bike trail which is where the walkers walked. Because of what that job entails she rode her bike almost 100 miles on the trail assisting walkers. She stopped at our Quick Stop for a few minutes and I was able to chat with her. She was EXHAUSTED!! Physically, mentally and emotionally . . .because there was an emotional connection to this for her. I found her after closing and gave her the ribbon to honor her! What a privilege!!
.JPG)
Everything starts with "Event Eve" on the Friday before the walk starts. This is where you finish up any registration, fundraising business, visit sponsor booths, shop in the Avon or Reebok shops, meet and greet. It is also where the crew members meet the rest of their teams, pick up equipment, receive assignments, etc.
In this event the walkers walk either a full marathon distance (26.2 miles) on Saturday, or they can choose to walk a 1/2 marathon distance (13.1 miles). On Sunday they walk a 1/2 marathon distance (13.1 miles). Walkers also are required to raise a minimum of $1800 for the Avon Foundation. Crew members pay a regisrtation fee and WORK . . . and I mean WORK . . for 2 1/2 days, but are not required to raise funds, although many crew members do.
When Robin and I WALK we are tired from walking. When we CREW we are tired ALL OVER!!! It is physically, mentally, emotionally exhausting work! But we have SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much fun doing it and just enjoy the benefit of accomplishing a mission, fulfilling a commitment and serving.
We are signed up to crew as QUICK STOP at the same event next year!!! YIPPEE!!! Thanks for letting us share! CJ . . and Robin

What else would be REALLY cool is if the Farmgirl Sisterhood - or ALL of us farmgirls, really - started at least one team in each state for this type of event (or maybe for the ACS Relay for Life???)!!! And then we could have "visiting sisters" come to our different events each year to join in and share support! I know Pittsburgh does a HUGE walk for breast cancer each year... Any farmgirls interested??? I'm game!!! "Farmgirls Think Pink!"
That's so awesome CJ, that you guys raised $1.6 million at that event!!! That's just SUCH exciting news! Congrats!!!

CeeJay~ Awesome. Thanks for doing it. I have just been diagnosed on 6/28. Lots of testing and biopsies. Surgery, chemo and radiation coming up. Because of all the research and funding it is no longer a death sentence and is very curable. No one wants this diagnosis but you deal with the hand you've been dealt. I let God be in control and I'm following His lead. Because of people like you and your daughter, there is great hope and more cures. Thank You!!! I would love to come to Colorado!

Thank you CeeJay. My son is taking me to Ocean City, Md. for a few days so I can enjoy the beach before my surgery/chemo/radiation. I will get back to you when I get back. God is Good All the Time and my trust and faith rest with him.

Darlene, Yes, GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME!!! He WILL be with you! I will pray for your time to enjoy the beach . . . and for you as you start your "journey". Please keep us posted.
Robin and I are committed to the cause! Thanking the Lord that neither of us have had to go on this "journey" and there is no family history of breast cancer. But we have many friends who have had to deal with it, some of whom are no longer with us. We do what we do because WE CAN! We do it for those who are not able! We do it because it is given to us by the Lord to do! Our hearts are with YOU! And our prayers go with YOU as well!!! God IS good!!! CJ
