Girls, my closest girlfriend just called, hysterical, devastated--I don't know if anyone (outside of Ohio) has heard about the shooting of 8 people in Akron, Ohio, but it was a shooting rampage, and sadly, a father and son who were close to my good friend (the father and his wife were co-boyscout leaders with my friend and her husband) were killed. They were visiting his sister and relatives nearby. The sister's boyfriend was the shooter. The father and son were shot and killed instantly, and the wife/ mother, Beth, found them as soon as she could get to them. I have met this family several times at parties and they were such dear people--she is a teacher for special needs children, and he's an engineer and they were so active in their son's life. He was adopted and they loved him terribly. The boy and my friend's son were best of friends, looking very forward to going to middle school together this year, and playing in the school band.

Please pray for all these souls, and for Beth, left behind to make some sense of what, by all accounts, makes none. I can't wait to go and hug my little girl.

Thanks to all of you--more details are coming, but apparently, the boyfriend was angry about some issue with his girlfriend's late parent's Will. He apparently killed another elderly couple, living next door, who were longtime friends of the deceased parents because they told him to "stay out of it" a little while back. This was in a very lovely neighborhood of old 1930's era Tudor houses and it seemed like such a quiet, peaceful place. Just can't figure out what makes people so evil.

Oh Jonni, that is so awful. All that the news seems to have anymore is story after story of some guy shooting others to death and sometimes himself =( It seems to primarily be male shooters too. What gives guys??? Yes, you have the right to bear arms, NO you don't have the right to use these arms in a temper tantrum to kill others! What in the name of God is wrong with people these days???? I'm so so sorry for Beth and everyone else that has been touched by this terrible and senseless crime.

Love and light to you and to the friends and family of those killed by this horrible man.

Thank you, Annika--I can't even describe what I feel for this woman, losing her family right before her eyes. The details that are coming out--it's like he was hunting people. Scott, the little boy, ran 4 houses away, and the shooter tracked him there, allowing the family to leave before he went in and shot him in the basement. As a mother, I can't imagine standing outside while all this was happening, watching it all unfold like some sort of surreal nightmare--God bless her. I don't know that I would make it after that. I just don't think I'd be strong enough. And the sister who's boyfriend did this? When she wakes in the hospital to realize this? I just don't know. It just makes me realize that nothing on this earth is permanent. Nothing.

Jonni, I know. You've just got to hug those that you love, friends and family are so precious. Never miss an opportunity to tell some one that you love them. To tell friends that they are special =)

I think of the delicacy of life nearly every morning when Jim leaves for work & maybe the last words I say are, "Make sure the dogs are in", or some other silliness.
I cannot make sense of a tragedy like this. What a waste.
Praying for you, as a dear friend, and the whole community.

Your words have meant a lot this morning, girls. After a sleepless night and much crying, still, I am reminded of the last time I saw Beth, Craig and Scott--how Beth, Julie and I ate a whole bowl of Benedictine spread that I made up for Julie's Kentucky Derby Party and had to make more! She marvelled over our little Violet and we talked about growing boys and "what to tell them about the birds and the bees" and how honest she was about educating her son about life in general. They were out of town on vacation over the 4th of July, so we didn't see them at Julie's then, but my goodness how I wish those very simple days were back. A bowl of benedictine and three women laughing over their children and husbands.

Throwing myself into work today!

Jonni, I had not heard about this terrible shooting - it makes me sick to think that anyone can be that heartless. I don't know what to say, there are no words at a time like this. Please know that I will be praying for all involved.
Big Hugs and lots of prayers being sent

Thank you all--more details today released by the police and news outlets, some too much to know, and more hugs and tears and conversations and thoughts, dedications, even singing to remind us about this lovely family. Good times, remembering those.

Their service will be at 4:00, Friday evening at their home church, here in Northern Kentucky. Like so many others, I will go and probably get on my knees and just wonder. We keep asking each other, "what should I say to Beth?" and I haven't figured it out yet.

Jonni, My suggestion is to hold Beth tight and let her know that you love her and are there for her. Actions can speak volumes at a time like this.
Still praying

Thanks, VioleRose--I always feel when someone passes that what I have to offer is too little. But I especially feel that way right now. I don't know if you've read any of the AP stories in online papers, but I don't know how any one person who lived through what Beth lived through and will continue to live through the rest of her life, could do it. I am thoroughly undone by the evil--and I feel like nothing I could ever say or do would be enough. But, you're right--I'm sure at the funeral this will all seem too surreal, and she may not even "know" the faces she sees. I recall trying to remember people at my father's funeral when he died suddenly and couldn't really...but giving her strength right now by being there is a good start.

Oh, Jonni - I had heard about this on the news, and just now found your post. SO sad... SO senseless. I am praying for you and everyone involved. I'm so saddened for all of you. Hugs - Nini

My friend, Julie, spoke with Beth this morning--she said it was so difficult. Poor Beth could hardly speak. She did ask my friend not to bring her boys to the funeral because she wanted them to remember the good times with Scott, not this. I can't blame her. Also, in the back of my head I just think seeing those boys, those dear friends of her son who is no longer on this earth might just break her in two, as if she isn't all ready.

Her minister has been with her in Akron (he drove up as soon as he got the call about the shootings--the police department contacted him) and he's been with her ever since. I'm grateful for that, though she must just be numb.

Thank you again for all your prayers and thoughts for this family, for all of the extended friends and family who can't quite wrap our minds around it. My friend's son put it best...I'd just like to think it's a nightmare....
