I'm looking for what I think was an American Indian prayer. It started with Don't weep for me, then something about I am the wind in the trees. It was beautiful and I would love to read it at services for my Grandmother Saturday. DOes anyone know where I can find it? Or something like it?

Thank you,
Laura

I found this poem so comforting after the death of my mother:

I AM NOT THERE

Do not stand at my grave and forever weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the Diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle Autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night

Do not stand at my grave and forever cry
I am not there, I did not die.

poem by Melinda Sue Pacho

May comfort be yours as well.

Here's one it's short but sweet
Don't weep at my grave,
For I am not there,
I've a date with a butterfly
To dance in the air.
I'll be singing in the sunshine,
Wild and free,
Playing tag with the wind,
While I'm waiting for thee.

Sorry for your loss

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! It was exactly what I was looking for. I still find it hard to believe that all of my Grandparents are now gone. How do we live without them? Thank yhou for the kind thoughts.

Laura, first I am so sorry for your loss, and will be thinking of you and wishing you peace and strength.

Next, there are several ones like that...here is what I could find for you...

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.

I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.

I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room,
I am the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die.

~ Mary Frye of Baltimore, Maryland in 1932~

Remember me with smiles and laughter, for that is how I will remember you all. If you can only remember me with tears, then don't remember me at all.
Laura I. Wilder

There's a very special place
Away from all this fear.
No discomfort or disgrace
Will ever reach you here.
Where all walk hand in hand
In the Lord's eternal love,
No vision can be more grand
Than this heaven up above.
So do not cry for me,
For my spirit now will soar,
Until joined in eternity
We'll be the friends we were before.

All Is Well

Death is nothing at all,
I have only slipped into the next room
I am I and you are you
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.
Call me by my old familiar name,
Speak to me in the easy way which you always used
Put no difference in your tone,
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household world that it always was,
Let it be spoken without effect, without the trace of shadow on it.
Life means all that it ever meant.
It it the same as it ever was, there is unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near,
Just around the corner.
All is well.
Henry Scott Holland

Canon of St Paul 's Cathedral

Life Goes On

If I should go before the rest of you
Break not a flower
Nor inscribe a stone
Nor when I am gone
Speak in a Sunday voice
But be the usual selves
That I have known

Weep if you must
Parting is hell
But life goes on
So .... sing as well
Joyce Grenfell
1910-1979

If I should go tomorrow
It would never be goodbye,
For I have left my heart with you,
So don't you ever cry.
The love that's deep within me,
Shall reach you from the stars,
You'll feel it from the heavens,
And it will heal the scars.

Do Not Weep For Me

I see the sadness in your heart,
The hurt that is in your eyes,
The tears that gently reflect upon,
The last day I said goodbye.

But this is to remind you,
That we'll meet again once more,
For it's here that my surroundings,
Is a place that I adore.

Please remember not the pain,
But all the love we shared,
For I am truly happy now,
In knowing how much you cared.

God's arms are wrapped around me,
Such love I have never known,
Rejoicing that I feel no pain,
For I am in God's home.

~Valentyne~ ©

“Perhaps they are not the stars,
but rather openings in Heaven
where the love of our lost ones
pours through and shines down upon us
to let us know they are happy.”

Eskimo Legend

Don't be dismayed at good-byes. A farewell is necessary before you can meet again. And meeting again, after moments or lifetimes, is certain for those who are friends.

Richard Bach

"Do not sit here and weep.
I am not here, I do not sleep.
I am the thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glint on snow...

I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain,
I am the shining star at night,
When you awake to the morning light.

My time has come, I am at rest.
I am the sunset in the west,
I am the clouds that race above,
Where I watch over those I love.

Do not sit here and cry,
I am not here, I do not die,
So hear these words that now I say,
I am the love that guides your way."
Author unknown

I hope one of these will be a help. I will be thinking of you!
Warm Hugz!!

PS please note that I added two versions of the Do Not Weep poem. One is the original and one is a rewritten form of it but I thought very lovely as well.

"If we could maintain the wonder of childhood and at the same time grasp the wisdom of age, what wonder, what wisdom, what life would be ours"

If you can find a copy of the Jewish foldtale, The Button" it is a wonderful story about sharing our life stories with others. It is about a tailor or semstress and a special fabric they buy , the clothing items they make from it as it wears out. It goes by many names: The Button, Grandfather's Story, etc. I tell a version I made up called "Grandma" to my students every year. My version honors my Dutch Great Grandmother. That would be another great forum thread: storytelling. Maybe I'll post it.
My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.
May you find comfort in sharing her stories.
Mary

Here's one that my friend wrote when her father died. I think you could easily change a few words to make it work for your Grandma. So sorry for your loss. My Grandma's been gone for 40 years and I still miss her.

"Dig a hole and bury it
Six feet underground
Placed in a box
That's filled with love
And tears spread all around
It's usless now, so dig that hole
Let the earth take back its own.
But Lord, please take the soul, the man
Take my father home"

I enjoyed reading all these poems. They are so inspiring.

I am sorry for the loss of your grandma, Laura. How fortunate you were to have a grandmother who loved you and who you loved in return.

Peace
