There is this hat I've been coveting in my local knitting store and I just got an email that it's included in a class being offered in two weeks. I knit pretty well, but I'm not the most "well versed" with changing colors and advanced stitches. The cost of the class is $45 plus materials...but I'm really coveting this hat and I want to expand my technique. I haven't really tried much more than simple knits/purls/increases, decreases, but I've made lace scarves and things of that sort, so I know yo's and other techniques...but this is SERIOUS. I don't know if you can see this or no, but I'm attaching it.
What do you girls think?

Jonni it's probably not as difficult as you might think it is. Learning any skill takes patience with the technique but I think you will master it without any problems. That's why you take the class instead of trying to muddle through it on your own. I don't think it is as difficult as you are making it out to be. Just remember, it's just one stitch at a time. You never know until you try...Just don't make it harder than it is - most of the things we try to do aren't nearly as hard as we think they will be. What do you have to lose but your fear of it and so much to gain from learning the skill. I hope you will go for it.

It's really fun to do and not that difficult once you get comfy with how to hold the yarns. Go for it!!!

Wow! How long do you have to be knitting to be able to do that? I can't even imagine knitting that. Go for it, Jonni. I bet you can do it.

I love knitting Fair Isle and have done so since I was a child. This looks like a good pattern to start with - the difficulties come when there are big gaps between each block of colour or multiple colours on each row but this looks like there are only small gaps and just two colours at a time and so good for a beginner.
Its so much fun as you watch the pattern develope row by row as you knit ... go for it

this is actually pretty simple mostly knit and in the round all you are learning is how to hold two colors usually one in each hand go for it the teacher will teach you what you need to know sounds like you already know all the basic for any project you will ever need to know it is just the detail of each project that you might have to get comfortable with like holding two yarns
skills in that hat are
- knit only should not be any purl as I can see the join of the knit in the round in the photo on the left
- holding two yarns
- maybe a provisional cast on not sure from the photo but probably not
- decreasing that is it

I know you can do it...Jonni, I wish I knew how to knit. My Momma taught me to crochet when I was little and I can do basic things but have never had anyone teach me to knit..and you can make so many different kinds of things doing knitting than you can crocheting. Have fun Jonni,

Wow! Thanks for the support, girls! I think I worried myself all night over this! But then I thought, that hat has little wrens on it--it's made for you (we have a little family of wrens that nest in my post basket on the front door, and now and again sneak into my house--I also call my daughter, Violet, "little wren"....
I am so happy that you girls took the time to look at the pic--thank you Wendy and Sue for mentioning the skills and the process. I'm commited to taking the class as it's something I've wanted to do for a while for myself--working full time and being a wife/mother/housekeeper/chef doesn't leave a lot of time for "me". HOPEFULLY, there will be something of worth to show all of you--and not when we're all 100!

I want that pattern, I love it:) I did my first fair isle in a earflap hat for my DD last year for Christmas and I think it came out really well and was truly not as hard as it looked. You can do it!

That would be soooo much fun to knit! I want to learn how to knit, I'd love to learn how to knit something like that! I can crochet but it's time I learn how to knit too. I'd say go for it!!!

Well, girls--I had to back out of the class and reschedule for the winter class. Bummed! The gal at the knitting store didn't mention there was "homework" when I called, so when I went to get my materials yesterday, the lady said, "you're really cutting it close on knitting the brim before class!" So, she put me down for the November or January class. I'm a little disappointed, but at least I'm still able to make this hat that I SO covet. Maybe I'll have a little more time then! Will keep you posted and will, of course, share my pattern after I figure it all out :)

Wow, I guess it would have been nice to know about the homework ahead of time but maybe it will work out better for you. Still plenty of winter left so you will be able to enjoy your hat once you finish it! Keep us posted, looking forward to hearing how its coming together :D

Yeah, it would have been... A few weeks ago, the shop sent out an email that they were looking for new help, so maybe she was just new. AT least there will be another class offered so that I don't miss out completely. THEN I would be frustrated!!!
As is is, I already have my September weekends filled then with other fun fall activites, like the Chataqua Arts Festival in Madison, Indiana. I was going to miss it because of the class, but that's a bright spot now that I'm rescheduled.

i agree with tammy, i want that pattern! I took a class last summer for fair isle and made a hat as well. I loved the class, i mostly got the hang of carrying yarn with two hands and wrapping the colors while carrying. Definately worth it! I so hope you are taking it :)
