I have been thinking lately of how many unnatural ingredients I am putting on my face when I wear make-up. But I also can't see myself going completely without it! :) I was wondering if any of you knew of any really good make-up brands that were all natural but also affordable? Or better yet, do some of you make your own?

I buy my make up at the co-op. Mineral stuff...and I buy boots cosmetics. they don't test on animals and the chemicals used are really safe (My Fella is a chemist and he reads every label of everything that comes into the house....I feel safe!!)
We ahve a great make up counter at our co-op.

Wow, I don't think our co-op has a make-up counter. In fact, unless I have really not been paying attention, I know they don't. Lucky girl!

I am getting winkles and my mineral make up doesn't look as good ad my BB cream. I love love BB cream. It took me a long time to find one w/out parabens because I can't read Korean. Missha Signature in the dark pink bottle, is the one I finally picked. Now you can get it at Sephora, and I'm sure the label is in English.
Wiki: BB cream, also known as Blemish Balm, Blemish Base or Beblesh Balm, is a cosmetic item sold mainly in East and Southeast Asia.[1]
Originally formulated in Germany by Dr. med. Christine Schrammek,[citation needed] it was initially used by dermatologists to help laser surgery patients protect, soothe and refine highly sensitive skin while providing light coverage for post-laser scars, acne and other blemishes.

I have been using everyday minerals makeup for the lats couple of years and love it. I've never liked the feel of liquid foundation and could never get it to look quite right. The mineral make up is light, but still gives me coverage.
They have a policy for no animal testing and you can see the ingredient list for each product. Also, super friendly costumer service!
Their website is www.everydayminerals.com

The ultimate natural beauty book : 100 organic beauty products to make and use easily at home / Josephine Fairley has recipes for making your own cosmetics. I have used some of the recipes with good results. I think she also gives sources for buying natural cosmetics as well. Hope that helps!

I buy my organic make up from Vitacost.com. I find they have the best selection & prices. Of course when it comes to looking good, nothing beats a good nights sleep!

I too am looking for natural cosmetics. I cannot go completely without make up--I'm too uncomfortable without any. But I want to keep what I do use to a minimum and natural.

Hi Lindsay,
My last entry on the Suburban Farmgirl blog was on going chemical free, including makeup. I use nothing now that isn't natural.

Lindsay,
I am a skin care and makeup junky. Have tried everything from natural to chemical laden and at all price ranges. Just recently I decided to go with Paula's Choice because she is supposed to be the makeup/skin care specialist. If you've ever watched Dr. Oz, I'm sure you've seen her. She makes recommendations on the best name brands to buy and has written a couple of books. She has her on line, so I decided to order her products since she's the expert. Her products are not supposed to contain any bad ingredients and they are not tested on animals. I haven't tried them yet, but will let you know after I've used them for a while.

Hey Ladies, I have a great recipe for lip gloss. You will need beeswax(just less than a cup), olive oil (just over a cup), berries (about a handful) and some sterile containers. You infuse the oil with the berries, so add the berries to the oil, and simmer on low heat for about an hour (when you can smell it in the air) and then strain. Put the oil into a double boiler add wax, let it melt. Put it into containers and let cool. You lips will look and feel awesome!

Physicians formula makes an organic brand. I use their foundation and mascara. I actually like their organic mascara better than my old traditional stuff - the only downside is that I do need to reapply if I'm going to go out in the evening, it tends to break down over the day with exposure to tears and facial oils. (Though that's probably a good thing, when you think about it).
I also like the Bareminerals and PF's mineral make up line. And Burt's Bees tinted lip balm is my fave lip color!
I'm just a 20-something girl making a home for me (and my dog) and waiting for the family to fill it!

I had been using Burts Bees but I've been looking into starting to make my own because I can't believe how over priced the products are for what is actually in them! So far I'm just in the research phase and I'm finding some things I'd like to try and as soon as I can afford the few ingredients I don't have then I just have to raid my pantry and use the oils I usually always carry in my pantry! THen it will be test phase. If this works I'll be saving myself so much money it would be shocking!

I stopped wearing makeup when I was 16. I know, that is when a lot of girls are just getting started and really experimenting...but I was fortunate to have this boy friend who told me that he liked me better with out it and so I just stopped wearing it. No, I did not marry him, but may have if circumstances were different. Anyway, I just never wore it daily from that point on.
Now, if I am going to a formal function I may put on a little blush and very light earth tone eye shadow, but that is all. I always felt like my face was suffocating when I wore base plus eye shadow, blush, eye liner, mascara....it all felt too heavy, I just didn't like that. I am 44 now and feel like I have nice smooth skin with no wrinkles and plan to just keep going "au natural"!
Guess I wasn't much help now was I....maybe I am just trying to say that no make up is as natural as you can get...

I too don't wear much makeup at all - especially when I'm home and working in the house or yard. I do use cleansers and moisturisers that are organic - they cost a little more than the stuff you get at Target, etc. (I buy it at my stylists shop), but a little goes a long way, so it lasts forever it seems. I'm 65 but don't have the wrinkles and age spots like some women have. My skin is really smooth. But I also wear a hat when I'm outside to protect my face from the sun. I also use Burts Bees on my lips. When I do have to wear makeup it's only on my eyes (wear glasses) and that's it - no foundation or blush or lipstick. Krystle, would be very interested in how your experimenting comes out. Keep us all posted. |

Beets make wonderful "rouge" and lip color. Ditto various berries.

I love my Everyday Minerals make up. I've never liked the look of liquid foundation on me. Something about my skin. I'm very fair, blonde hair, pale skin and I don't need much coverage.
I generally brush on some foundation in the morning and a little bit of a setting powder. Add a touch of mascara (again, blonde so you can't even tell I have eyelashes if I don't wear mascara) and I'm done.
I do have some of their eyeshadows and powdered eyeliner that I use when I'm playing a gig or just need to feel fancy for the day.

I have been buying from a local business that started from a kitchen. She know has a storefront now and sells everywhere. I really like her mineral make up. It is quality make up for a retail store price. Her website is joppaminerals.com
