*scrapes the snow off her shoes* Good morning! My name's Alyce, and I'm a born-and-raised Wisconsinite. I grew up in a small town and right now am in Madison, but the Man of the House and I hope to build an earthship out in the country within the next few years. (I can hardly wait; I want to plant a garden, and all of the concrete and traffic are making me crazy!)

I discovered MaryJane some years ago when I ran a search on my favorite pastime, crochet, and found her old article about crochet helping troubled teens. By the time I'd read every article on her site, I knew I'd found my new heroine.

I'm a librarian, but currently I manage a gym (not sure how that one happened!). I love to crochet, spin, read, cook, and bake. I sew and sketch, and I enjoy photography when I have space for a darkroom. We've chosen not to have kids (I can't physically anyway), so we spoil our bird rotten. I really look forward to making new friends and learning everything I can. Who wants some homemade monkey bread?

A hook, a book, and a good cup of coffee....

Hi Alyce!

Welcome to MJF - I hope you enjoy it here as much as I do! I have no idea what monkey bread is, but I'm game to try anything!

Hugs,

Thanks Luanne! I'm loving it here already!

Monkey bread is sometimes called pull-aparts...sticky, cinnamon-y, buttery goodness.

Thanks Kris! It was so funny...I'm a total earth mother (organic food, peasant blouses, the works) and Ric is a very fashion-forward techie. We like our apartment but know it isn't permanent, but we both have different "dream homes"--or at least we did until his best friend sent him an article on earthships. We read it, looked at each other, and said, "That's it!" (Heck, if we had storage space, I'd be saving up glass bottles already.)

Unfortunately, Ric gave a thumbs-down to me having sheep (he's a vegetarian, so I can't even have a wool-producer)--but I can plant a garden on the roof!

Alyce, How about some monkey bread made in a cast iron pot over some coals in the great outdoors! Earthships are cool! I got your e-mail and am replying to you today. Can't wait to see if we can meet up sometime! Maybe at the indoor farmer's market in Madison....

Welcome Alyce...I love monkey bread! My boys think I only call it that because I tell them there is monkey bread for the monkeys in the house.

So glad you have joined us here. I haven't been here long, but have loved getting to know some of the other women. Looking to forward to following your journey out of the city!

Thanks Wendy! (I had to check your location because for a minute I thought you were my cousin--who also admires MJ.) My grama and mom used to say the same thing. Kind of makes you wonder why it's called "monkey bread", eh?

Terri, it's a form of house built entirely of recycled...junk, for the most part (many of them have a wall of old tires for insulation). They are often built partway into the earth, they have lots of south-facing windows...they are pretty darn cool.

And yes, this is a great place!
