Hello gals,
I can't tell you how excited at the notion that I finally have sisters! I always wanted a sister but only ended up with one cantankerous older brother. :/ I did sort of adopt my best friend as a sister recently but then she moved away to her new farm! While I am so happy for her, I find myself really sad as of late. I hope one day to find my own farm but now that I am 40, its starting to feel less probable. My kids are all growing like weeds. 9, 14 and 18. The oldest leaves for college in the fall. Always thought of having a farm with my kids, not once they were gone.
Anybody find their way to farm later in life?

Hey Rachell - welcome to the forum. I think there are all kinds of ways to get to the farm and you will find yours!!

| Hi, Rachell. My dreams of farm and measurable land are slipping away as well. I would like to buy the property around me. One way or another, I will get my acre. Of course I may be to old to do anything with it. :( Obviously, I won't be able to have any farm animals, since we are not zoned AG. I might be able to squeeze some chickens in. After the Bloodhound Red passes on, of course. (beating my head on the desk) Meh, God knows best what is for me. So, I will be content with what I have.. best I can. |

Oh I know only too well your thoughts....I am going to be 53 soon and I had promised myself that by 40 I would have my little piece of heaven, which includes chickens and goats of course! But I am not giving up! We are in the process of looking around for a piece of land now : )

We moved to our farm when I was 48 after the kids were raised and I still love it. I have had goats, they are great, and chickens, love them too. so don't think you are too old, you are still a youngin to me...

Hi,
I am new to the whole Farm girl scene, just joined Mary Jane's Farm this past weekend. I moved to this little 8 acre farm in Massachusetts just a year ago and yes, I am older (51 years young). Its hard work but so very much fun and rewarding.
Also, Rachell, I just was paired up with you as a penpal

Hi- I am new here. I have been reading for long time. You all are so much fun. When I retired {I am old... 66 .. LOL} My sweetie of 44 years got me a new computer so thought I would jump in the mix. I am in Kansas.
We have 8 acres and just built a new house and barn. We have been on this ground for 27 years. Raised our three kids here and now feels like we have a new place. LOL only animal right now is our Lab. She is my baby and I have her spoiled.. dont ever give up on your Dreams. We didn't and now it has come true.

I think it would be much more physically challenging as we get older, but my dream to live in the country and have chickens and goats will not leave me : )

I big welcome from Tennessee! While we do have a couple acres, chickens, lots of garden area and try to live our dream of the farm-life as much as possible, I know how you feel. I grew up on a farm in Ohio, and always dreamed of my children growing up on a farm as well. While my littles are currently only 5 and 2, my husband and I are not exactly "spring chickens" anymore, but....we're still hoping and praying!

I'm brand new here, too. I know too well what you mean. We moved here 5 years ago. The first year was THE BEST...the kids were all interested, they hadn't started college or gotten too involved in the local scene yet. Now...I struggle to keep up and get it done. I should say "we" because without DH's prodding, I'd be drinking tea and reading books all day LOL! Welcome! |

| Welcome Rachell. I turn 50 next Wed. Farming doesnt end as we age it just gets done differently! Dont put it all on hold. Try gardening in pots on the back deck for now and such. We had to live in a no pet appt once. Go from bottle calves to nothing. I was hating it. My hubby bought me an aquarium until we could move. Something to cultivate and care for. |

Well gals, it's time for an update! After looking around ALOT all manner of places, we have made an offer on a little house with a little property in Mars Hill, NC, not far from Asheville.
We could not afford to get exactly what I would have wanted, but this place does have a nice house and just under 1.5 acres where I am free to have chickens, roosters, bees and milking goats, as well as my raised bed gardens!
I am really excited to moving one more step in the direction of my dreams. Thank you all for your input and your support.
PS Did MJ write a book about her life?
