I am thrilled to have found this sight. Looking forward to learn and exchange ideas. My family and I are planning to move off the grid this summer and start a new adventure. We have been learning and collecting information for several years but the reality is finally here. The Money. You need to have some money to do this. We are looking in the northeast area of Washington around Republic and Oganagon county. We like it east of the mountains. Right now where we live it is beautiful green with lots of trees and brush. We really love it here but it is very expensive to buy any amount of property and we want at least 20 acres, preferably more. There is myself, my daughter, her husband and two boys, 9 and 11 and two dogs, Axel and Sweetie.
I have always felt I was born at the wrong time and I can't wait to get back to the wilderness. Honestly I have never really lived in the wilderness but have dreamed about it all my life.

Linda, I wish you and your family much luck and happiness, how wonderful to finally realize your dream. I hope you will keep us posted as you start your journey and beyond. I envy you I would love to live during the Little House on the Prairie Days. what an adventure it would be.

Thank you Debbie, I plan to keep it posted but sometimes life gets in the way so there may be lapses in between. Right now we are still looking and getting over the mountain pass is a little more stressful than I want. I am not a big fan of driving in the snow. However my daughter just bought a Toyota 4runner so that we could.

| Linda, Have you looked farther east into Stevens County or Pend Oreille County? It's a little more greener than the Republic and Okanagon areas. Pend Oreille County is probably wetter or snowier. We live southeast of Colville. If your doing solar only it's probably a little harder to do than Okanagon county. Prices might be a little better since lots of the land is used to grow fruit crops. There is lots of pestiside use their too but their is a wonderful organic market in Tonsaket. JoAnn |

Linda, check out the surrounding areas of Spokane and also around the Palouse...
Citi-Data.com is a great source but it is a few years outdate/behind info wise...but still a good usfull tool.
Reardon and Davenport are quaint little communities if you want to go off the grid.... and "The Buggy Barn" is located in Reardon...

Thank you Grace, I did check out Citi-Data.com for Republic and I found it very informative even if it was older data. It still gave me an idea about what they have. I shall look into Reardon and Davenport. I sure have been enjoying our wonderful sunshine.

We( meaning daughter, husband, two grandsons, 9&11)took a ride today up in the mountains in our new used Toyota 4runner and the sun was shining and it was warm and oh so beautiful. Mount Baker and the Twin Sisters are so beautiful and the sun was shining on them perfectly. Somehow I stepped on my camera so the screen was cracked and I could only see one corner. I did get a couple of good pictures. We had our first picnic of 2012. It was great and the kids got to explore and run around. I think they are going to love living in the woods.

Hello Suzanne,
My oldest sun lives in Burlington. I wouldn't mind property up highway 20 but the ones we looked at were a little more expensive than we planned. I lived in a 14' trailer with 3 kids a disabled husband and two great danes on top of Pine MT, in Ojai, Ca. We were camp hosts for the year and guarded the Condors for the forest service. I tried to home school my kids there and they actually sent someone from the school district to come and tell me my kids had to be on school. It was a two hour bus ride for them and we had to drive them down the mountain. That did not last very long. We moved on. We brought our water from a spring where we hulled gallon milk jugs from and when the forest ranger visited he brought water in his tank to fill our garbage cans. It was a fun adventure and my daughter and I remember it fondly. It was diffidently a learning experience for all of us. It gave me a new perspective on the homeless and how easy it is to become one. Things are great now and I wouldn't change any of my past.

Linda! I'm so tickled that you and I get to share our adventures. I'm so excited for you! And I cannot begin to tell you how envious I am that you got to monitor Condors! Did you see them a lot? I've seen lots of video but wow, in person would be amazing. You've sure done a lot of adventuring. I think you will be right in your groove off-grid. I hope you liked the soapdish. If it gets loose while it's drying just put it in water overnight. Welcome, welcome, welcome!

Thank you Susan for the soap dish and it is working out great. Yes the condors are awesome and I only got to see them three different times and I was amazed at how ugly they are in their beauty. They are like giant vultures. Mostly at the top of Pine Mt. we had hand gliders on the weekends so the condors did not come out much then. The people flying around were also awesome to watch. I always wished I could fly with them but afraid to give it a try. The expense also had a lot to do with it. We were on the mountain to watch for lightening down strokes and report them to the forest service. It was amazing how much lightening there can be with no rain. One time we went down to the spot where we got our water and I went to wash my hair and the water was so cold it froze my head. I felt bad that I had made the kids go first not realizing how cold it was. After that we would wash our hair when ever we went to town for supplies. It was quiet an experience. It is amazing how much of our food needed water. We only had an ice box so planning meals with out refrigeration was a challenge. This time when I go to the woods my kids are all grown up and my grandkids have their mom to fend for them. We shall all work as a team and this will also be different. My husband was bedridden at the time so it was me and the kids who were to small to really be of much help.
