I work in retail and I've been watching woman and girls come and go wearing those printed fleece pajama pants while shopping? I personally love them!...for pajamas! Who on earth started this bizarre trend and why? Young girls...maybe, but I've seen women I Know are my age or older wearing them and I'm 45!

Sherry.. I commute to work using public transportation and every morning there are several college students who are in their pajama pants. It's so weird!

I work at a middle school where girls and boys have been wearing them to school for years. They even wear their big furry slippers.

| Oh my, this is happening in Texas also. During Christmas Holidays, there was an epidemic of it. My daughter and I wondered who would wear their pj's shopping. But I have to tell you, we see it all the time. And there is no age preferance. My grandson works at Target and he tells us of all the strange things that are worn to the stores. His favorite is when Dad,mom and 3 children come in on friday night for popcorn, they are all in matching pj's, guess they go home and watch movies. He says everyone waits for 8:30, they have been doing this for about 2 months, and they have a variety of pj's. Oh well to each his own. Have seen the animal slippers, and even the boots, one place have not seen the pj's is at church. YET! Thanks for the subject!! Farmgirl #946 Linda |

I wear sweats or polar fleece jammies to do morning chores and I'm always embarrassed when people drive by... Can't imagine wearing them to town!

My mom and I were discussing this very thing just last weekend. I cannot wrap my mind around it, at all. Our school has a dress code, and we had to add no pajamas, pajama pants, etc. to the description in our handbook. I couldn't believe it.

I live in a college town and always used to see kids wearing pjs to their morning classes...but lately, they don't even bother to shower and dress for their later classes! Geez, if they want to stay in their pajamas all day they should just marry millionaires. 
(Note that I tend to wear my pajamas all day if I'm just staying in--but set foot outside in them? Not unless I had to escape a disaster.)

I see it constantly--and it sort of grosses me out. I love pj bottoms and wear them at my house most weekends when I'm cleaning or whatever, but after I shower, I actually put on clothing.
We had a case going for a hearing a few days ago and I had to call the client to advise them NOT to wear flip flops OR pj bottoms like the last time she was in court. The Judge found her attire disrespectful, and even though we had advised her on what to wear, what to say, what to smell like, not to have her tatto's visible, etc.., she said that those were her "good clothes"...WTH?
I guess if you pair your pj bottoms with a Victoria's Secret "PINK" hoodie, you're high fashion these days. Whatever, it looks sloppy and lazy..but then, I sortof think that already about the generations younger than me!

Wearing PJs to early classes was the trend when I was in college. I tried it once, and never again. I'm just not comfortable going out in public like that, or even staying in my PJs all day at home. Feels like I've missed the whole day if I don't shower and change at some point.
But I see it all the time now too. I have to say, I think cute young girls can get away with it. My youngest sister owns about a million pairs of pajama bottoms--just the bottoms--and she wears slippers to work often. Honestly, it's hard to tell these days what's actually been worn to sleep in and what's been put on specially for going out. |

Some of the girls who wear pajamas in public call it a "fashion statement" but I think it's a fashion MIS-statement. But the funniest thing I ever saw was late at night, at the grocery store, this more-than-middle-aged woman was wearing a robe and fuzzy duck slippers. Proving that the younger generation has nothing on us old geezers.

After reading some of these replies, I started looking at people's feet... a little creepy, maybe, but i'll call it investigative journalism for these purposes,  ...
People are really wearing slippers with these pants! I was flabbergasted! A midnight run for baby medicine, okay, but a midday shopping trip for hair colour, makeup and more??? WOW!

It is appalling how many people just don't care anymore. I don't think you should worry about what other people think but I do think you should have some self pride in how you take care of and carry yourself. You won't catch me in town with pjs on I promise.

| I see slippers with everything too, not just the pajama bottoms. I'll see a woman in jeans and a jacket and look down and she has on what are obviously slippers (although not always animals!). My oldest stepdaughter does it all the time - she either wears slippers or flip flops, no matter what the weather. I understand it is sometimes hard to find shoes that fit (that is always her complaint), but geez, it looks pretty sloppy not to wear real shoes, especially to work. |

I'm not a fan of pj pants either. I have heard its a "fashion statement" too. I agree it's a fashion MIS-statement. Seriously, if so many people are doing it then someone explain to me how its a statement anymore? I can see if one or two people are doing it but all these people doing it? I call it lazy. Or maybe just they are so overwhelmed they don't care about how the world sees them? I have 3 kids under 3, a husband, a bunch of animals and recovering from surgery. Did I once step foot out in pj pants? NO. I didn't. I'm not vain but I found that if I don't get dressed in normal clothes I tend to feel kind of like the day is just dragging on. When you get up for the day and get regular clothes on its like telling ourselves "ok time to get down to business and get stuff done" but when you live in your jammies its like telling ourselves "who cares? I sure don't". I don't think anyone really has an excuse for going out in jammers. It's like seriously people? If you want to make a fashion statement do what women in other countries do. Some put heels on for grocery shopping! Now THAT is a fashion statement :)

i wold live in my night gown or pj's if i could-however! i DO NOT like to see it in public and i would not be caught in mine unless rushed to ER!
i worked as an overnite cashier at a kmart about 4 years ago-i was astounded at the ppl THEN who were coming out in obvioulsy pj's-and not even clean looking ones....
the story about the target shoppers who do movie nite is cute however- putting everybody in jammies to go to the drive in movie as opposed to target is a diff story--
i'm 58 -i'm an old fogie..i do NOT enjoy looking at belly buttons, butt cracks, pants hanging down showing underwear or pjs and slippers in the grocery or any other store..and just wait til weather warms up go to walmart and watch out!!OMG!!!
when i walk our dog in the back yard outside the apt i shudder when i am in my nightgown but-the neighbors-all much younger-are in their pj pants so i guess i fit in!!!

This is one of my soap-box topics - I get going on a regular basis on this. It does seem lazy to me especially when people can't even put on a clean pair - have we really relaxed our standards that much? My husband's family tends to go everywhere in sweatpants, which in my opinion is only a half-step up, especially when you wear them with slippers. I mean really - the big Christmas celebration of the year, the one time we all see everybody in the family and you are in pj's/sweats?
I collected and sold vintage clothes for years, and while I don't want to start wearing corsets or girdles (:)) I do think it would be nice if people started to "dress" again. I do like this trend that the hipsters have going with hats - I think the world would be a better place if men still wore hats, although I also think the world would be a better place if it was more like a musical and we burst into song and dance on a regular basis.
So there's my 2 cents (maybe 6 cents)- definitely with you all!

I've been laughing all the way through this topic. We see it all the time around here also. At first I though it was "just a fad". This is one fashion statement I'll skip. (be glad world..I'm over 60). Then again, I felt the same when everyone started wearing sweats outside the gym. Still refuse to wear them. I'm afraid I will get too comfortable outside the house. Scaey.

I support pajama pants in college, I think it is a way of being "free". But if you are not dressed by lunch, I have an issue. I love to be in my pajamas all day, but I do not leave the house in them. If I am sick, I have a few pairs of yoga pants and I will wear them, they are comfortable and low key. I think that the fashion movement right now is on extreme ends. There is either the lazy way or the really put together way. Don't get me wrong there is still medium ground but it is getting smaller.

I love PJ pants - AT HOME!! They are for AT HOME! When my two oldest girls were in preschool there was no drive-thru drop off or pick up for security reasons and we had to walk in to drop them off or pick them up every day. I remember every year there would be at least three to five moms who would be wearing PJ pants at 8 am to drop off there little one, and they WOULD STILL BE WEARING THE SAME PJ PANTS when they came back at 11:30 am! It was mind blowing.
I have never left my home in my pajamas, and unless we have a house fire or a gas leak and have to run for it, I never will!

I think it looks sloppy and lazy. I love it when I see the older generation still dressing up. Little grannies with their hair all done and makeup on wearing a nice pant suit or dress with a cute cardigan. Old men with their button down shirts and sweater vests, sometimes a tie. I also love hats and I wear them often, but not with PJ pants!

It is sad when one has no more respect for themselves.. (or others) to parade around in fuzzy, "pilled", sloppy, ragtag looking pajama bottoms n top it all off with big ole disgusting, dirty slippers...and ole ratty hair pulled up in a wad on top of their head. can we say...Nasty..jus sayin..

So agree big time with all of you - it's just nasty! Shirley, you are so right when you wrote that these people don't have any respect for themselves. PJ's belong at home and not out for the whole world to see. This is as bad as the "fashion" statement of women wearing spagetti strap tops with their bra straps showing. Guess they haven't heard of strapless bras.

Yeah I don't get this fashion statement or whatever it is. While jammies are very comfortable they are not for going to the grocery store, or anywhere in public. Unless you are under the age of 2 or going to the emergency room.
I agree with other posts that wearing jammies and slippers in public definitely says "I don't care".
