I sat down to the computer this evening only to find that my entire website has been suspended. What???? I have been on the phone for the last hour and a half with the server people and it appears that somebody decided to attack the site and has started robo-hits onto my site and the server has had to shut it down. I don't know what to do. I have messeged my web designer and am hoping he can get on it tomorrow but as of now, I have no website, no blog, no nothing. Do people just not have enough time on their hands to come up with such mean things to do???

So sorry to hear about your website. Hopefully, it will be online again tomorrow. Its probably someone who's doing it just because they can and isnt thinking about what it does to the victim. Keep your chin up, Mary Beth!

I'm sure it won't be long before they get everything back in order. Until then, try to keep yourself busy with something else...
Now that I think of it, my horoscope today said something about business deals and expected payments may be delayed... I'll have to let you know when the stars line up for us better!  |

I'm so sorry this happened to you! It's so difficult because you feel like you can't even defend yourself... I'm not sure why a few people have to ruin it for everyone else! Hang in there-I'm sure they'll get your site back on track.

Thanks y'all. Got up this morning and the site is still down. Trying to get hold of the man who designed it to see what to do. I'm just not smart enough to know how to deal with mischief!! We shall see.

I have never heard of such a thing! How awful! I hope things get straightened out for you soon, MaryBeth! I love popping in on your site from time to time! You have such great information and recipes, and I just love reading your entries! I'm sure it must be so frustrating to have all your efforts come to a screeching halt like that. That really bites, Mary Beth--the internet is a bit of frightening place for me at times. I just can't believe that a) people are mean, but b) they have that much freakin' time on their hands. Go outside, read a book, volunteer at a charity. But no, they'd rather sit inside and hack things.
Ridiculous--and I'm sorry that it happened to such a dear person like you. Things can be restored, but it's certainly a headache, and one thing you didn't count on.

You all are awesome. I have to admit that I didn't sleep much last night. It's almost like somebody has robbed you. Ick. And I guess they did, because they wiped all of the files off of the server and that just made me sick. 4 years of blogging and photos gone. But the man at Fatcow.com saved the day and was able to restore everything. Bless his heart. And he was so funny about it. He was in Tempe, AZ for any of you Arizon gals. Anyway, we figured out that the attack came from Russia and they hit my site nearly 800,000 times. I'd be Oprah to really have THAT many people visiting it!!! :-) As it is, I'm just a plain ol' Okie who doesn't get nearly that many hits. This has been an experience for sure. Thanks for all your kind words.

Thank goodness that man was able to fix things for you, Mary Beth! I still can't imagine why on earth someone would do such a thing. Is there any indication as to who may have done this and why? I guess the Russians really must've liked you, too! ;)

Oh, I am so glad that you were able to retrieve everything. Sometimes technology is great.
I agree with all the others who posted about the folks who have nothing better to do than to wreck someone else's hard work. Why? I don't understand. If that person is that gifted, why not use the talent for good?

Yep. Crazy people out there. We found out that the IP address was given out by a company in the Netherlands to somebody in the Ukraine. Evidently, they sent out a virus to many computers to start attacking my site (what did I ever do to Ukrainians anyway?). It's called a Denial of Service Access attack and it so overwhelms the server that the site gets shut down. But on top of that, the files were removed too. FatCow is supposed to have a Firewall to prevent this type of thing, but they told me that this numbskull in Russia was smart enough to make the hits come slowly enough to fool the firewall. If they had come rapidly, they would have been rejected. I didn't realize that I have my whole site backed up somewhere else besides this company so I feel lots better!! I can tell you that I have learned more about servers, software and files then I EVER cared to learn!!

There's an off site server that you can use to back up your internet and pc files. I know you probably don't listen to Glenn Beck (radio talk show host) but he endorses a particular site. If I can remember it, I'll post it for you. You could probably go to his web site and find out what one it is www.glennbeck.com

Lorena, actually, I DO listen to him and I know the site you are referring to. I will talk to my web designer and see if he thinks I need to do that beyond what we are already doing. We have our files backed up at another location so hopefully that is all I need to do.
And I finally got a new post up after all of this craziness. The strawberries are awesome this year!! Just picked this morning and put a photo of them up. :-)

Yes, Sharon. I started noticing on my Feedjit log that I was getting hits from Russia, however, my blog and my website are actually two different things tied in together. In other words, the hits to my blog get counted on the website, but the hits on the website don't get counted on the blog counter. So, I would watch your stats and if you start seeing a whole bunch of hits, nip it in the bud at the server! :-)
