Doctor suggested I cut back on coffee. With great difficulty, I will, not totally but at least slow down on it.
I looked for Postum in the store today, couldn't find it, Binged it and found it's been discontinued.
What else is there that is similar to Postum?? Not teas either. Teas go a long way with me, a little tea lasts a long time with me. So, someinthig like Postum.
Ideas or thought??

I don't think I have ever heard of Postum. Does the doctor want you to cut down on caffiene so could you do something like half caff?

I don't know of any other product to replace postum, but maybe like Alee suggested, half the caffine? I drink 1/2 and drink about 3 pots of coffee a day. It does not make me hyper or shakey like regular coffee.

The first link is the story of Postum. I remember my meemaw drinking it, way back in the early 1960's or so. The second link, which I didn't see before, says they may start making it again in June 2012.
I didn't think of half/half...that would prolly hold me till it hits the shelf or I can order it.
Actually, it's the caffeine and, while not in coffee, sodium.

If you can find a health food store that carries it, Roma is good. It's roasted soy and tastes real similar to coffee. I love it, but it's really strong, so I can't let Hubby make it for me.

I like the half caf idea, too. You could actually work your way down on the caf even farther. I'm not a tea drinker either, but I LOVE chai tea - it's got all kinds of spices in it, and tastes almost like pumpkin pie without the pumpkin. Caffeinated tea bothers me a whole lot less than coffee does. When I decided to let go of coffee, I did the half caf thing for a while, then decaf and caffeinated chai, then decaf chai. Oregon Chai is the brand I use, and I love to mix it with vanilla soy milk, or even cream. It is super yum!
We even named our dog Chai originally because she's the same color as the tea mixed with milk. Now we say her name is Chai because she is so sweet (which she is).
Anyway, just a random thought!

How about Pero? It's a grain based coffee substitute from Switzerland similar to Postum. It's available in stores here. I've also noticed advertisements for INKA, Ersatz and AyurvedicRoast in some magazines I subscribe to. I've never tried any of them but they are all considered coffee substitutes. Hope you find something that works for you!

How about chickory "coffee"? I don't know much about it, but I guess it's popular in the southern states?

The Vermont Country Store carries Postum. My grandmother used to drink it but I didn't care for it but it's been 55 years since I tasted it so who knows if I'd drink it now.

I've had chickory coffee in New Orleans. Can't remember if I liked it or not. Didn't know about the other products mentioned and will check them out! We have a health food store but it's only open a few days a week, still I can try to find something.

| No more Postum? Too sad! There's Inka which I personally drank for an entire summer as a teen when staying with cousins in Poland because at the time tea and coffee were in short supply. Teeccino isn't bad, my husband bought some and it was tasty. I like Inka and craved it for a year after returning home from Poland. It's available in the U.S. as Inka Naturalis. They have a website too, inka coffee dot com. |
