Howdy!
I wish to make the Day to Night Dress from Indygo Junction. It has princess seams. The size small is too big for me. I think I will need to take in the non princess seams, like the side seams and maybe the shoulder. I have thrift store fabric with which to do this, but I really don't know where to start. Any hints?
I would say my bust measurement is around 33 and the dress has a finished bust of 38.

Mary, I would make a muslin out of sheets first. I would begin by taking in the side seams - is the bust the only place it's too big? If it's too big all over, I would cut the pattern out of the sheet, just sewing the princess seams and then the shoulder seams, slip the muslin on inside out. Standing in front of a mirror, pin the side seams and even the princess seams until you think it's a good fit. Carefully take it off, and baste the new seam line into the muslin. Put it back on and check for fit. If you have wrinkles across the chest, you may need to alter the line of the shoulder seam to take out upper chest fullness. The angle of the shoulder seam may need to be sharper to accomodate for less chest fullness. A good way to make this quick to take apart again is to use water soluable basting thread in either the bobbin or needle thread. Then when you are satisfied with the fit, trim away excess fabric to a reasonable seam allowance. Then spritz the seams to dissolve the thread and just pull it apart. Press your muslin and use it as your custom fit pattern. I hope that helps.

The dress is not very fitted, it is just too big for me! I hope I can amend it. I might take it to a pattern adaptation class. Or I might just go for it!

Just jump in - you never know you can do a thing until you do it! If you've got some sewing experience, you will do just fine. I am a firm believer in the "muslin" when altering a pattern. That's what I did when I designed my DIL's wedding gown - I altered that muslin several times before I was satisfied with the fit and then used it as the pattern.
