We have this new girl at the hospital, she's a courier,and she's been asking all kinds of questions like: (looking at a box of needles) "Do they count all the needles in there?" "Why are these things kept locked up?" "What kind of lock is it?" She asked one girl if she was Jewish because "you have a big nose". The girl replied (politely, which is more than I would have done) "I look like my grandmother who came from Sicily". "Sicily? Where's that?" (This girl claims she graduated in the top ten percent of her class). She has a child, is on welfare, yet gets a manicure/pedicure every two weeks, always has money for beer and cigarettes, says that since her mom won't support her, her grandma is still working, at eighty years old! Oh, and as courier, she'll be responsible for transporting money. And the town she lives in has a reputation as a meth paradise. Does anyone else see any trouble with this? Or am I just being overly suspicious? She told one girl that she "must be white trash" because of where the girl lived (then she laughed like it was a joke). My God, what does she think of me??? I grow my own food, wash everything in cold water, have a compost bin---I must a poor hillbilly, or worse. I guess I'm third world or something. And the sad thing is, the rest of us are working to support her. Sorry, just had to vent.

Yikes...I think I'm more concerned about the judgement of the person who hired her for the position. I would definitely say something before something bad comes of her behavior.

Either she's totally clueless or she's like my neighbor's niece--a crackhead who's looking for an easy way to score (who also happens to be a nurse's aid--she's been in and out of jail for the last 2 years, though, but gets hired right back on at any home health care place in a heartbeat.)
Not at all trying to put valid healthcare workers down, but I've been reading articles and hearing stories for the last few months around here in Cincinnati that the healthcare system (in nursing facilities, rehab hospitals, clinics, etc...) is one of the most unregulated as far as "who" they hire--no background checks. In Hamilton County alone, there was a high percentage of nursing home workers who had lengthy criminal backgrounds (and that's not to say some hadn't reformed--I believe in 2nd chances!) but they all had access to drugs and personal property of their patients and many of these workers abused that.
I think I'd just bring it to the attention of your supervisor--if they are the person who hired her, I think I'd go up--lawsuit waiting to happen!

Wow- I would definitly talk to your employer about your concerns. Even if they don't act on them right away at least it would be on file that you had done so!

I'm a CNA, and I can tell you that with the demand so high, most places hire ANYONE... it's terrible for the patients/residents AND the fellow staff that actually care. The facility I worked for until a few months ago (staying home with the baby for a bit) did background checks, drug tests, etc. I still had hinky coworkers. Heck, some of the nurses were questionable. Healthcare has a heavy draw for the opportunistic employees in the worst way. It is no fun to work with someone and always wonder "What did they take today?" I highly recommend telling someone. And keeping a record in WRITING of everything she does that you find alarming. That way when they say "We need cause to fire her." You can plop that on their desk and say "You're welcome."

| I work in healthcare and we do background checks on everyone, I know for nurses their licenses is checked nation wide, and yes there is a large problem with drug abuse, very sad but so true. It think this new girl is throwing up several red flags. |

Wow What a rude new person to have to work with. I think I would be suspicious also. I think I would talk to some one. Maybe she has a boy friend or someone that is a user. You never know......

What the other ladies said...and...WHO cares what she thinks about you! You're honest and hard working. You grow your own food. You're not a drain on society. You're not an opportunistic parasite. I work in a hospital and I will give you this advice. Always cover yourself, don't reveal too much of your personal/private life, work in a professional, courteous manner. She's asking "stupid" questions because the answer seems obvious to those who have already worked in the medical field. If she is casing the joint to steal money or other things, she will get caught soon enough. And with her big mouth she will be the first suspected if anything goes missing.

Listen, I have one like that at work myself. She was asking about the safe, where we put our money bags after our till is counted. She makes shakes and other expensive frozen drinks and takes them home with out paying for them (I work fast food). My boss knows this is going on and has cut her hours at work, so she's trying to milk her time by staying way past closing (boss won't let her be in the store alone, so someone has to stay with her so that her druggie friends won't some in after we leave). She's tried scoring pot from customers. I feel for ya. I mentioned yesterday (not to her, but she over heard) that I couldn't come in on friday if anyone called out. She mentions to another coworker that she knew someone who could provide child care if I needed it. Over my dead body. Birds of a feather, ladies. Can't wait till she's fired. I know this is unchristian of my but...

I would write down all these events, time & date to keep on hand....not only can she bring down the hosp by someone suing for her personal comments but things could start missing & you would be covered by what you have written down....I honestly don't think she is stupid but is doing these jokings as a way to hurt/slam people....in any place of business this would not be allowed to go on long since the threat of a lawsuit might occur.....also since she is asking so called stupid questions about how things are done could she be a mole placed in there to make sure you all are doing what you are suppose to do?.........could she be doing the so called stupid comments to people to keep you all off guard/...yeah I know thats being overly cautious on my part....either way she needs someone documenting her ever move & odd comments......Michele'

I work as a nurse who has had background checks and drug screens on every job I've had. I have still had co-workers on drugs. I agree with Natalie and Michele. I have always kept a log at home, writing down ANYTHING that happened at work that day out of the ordinary..like a fall or an angry, loud pt or pt family, a rude Dr. talking in front of patients, etc. It has saved me more than once. Watch your back and write it down. You're probably right and they will need "cause" to fire her. It took almost a year for a hospital I worked at to get rid of a bad nurse-till they wanted "cause" and understood what I had been saying all along, and then they wanted my notes,,a year of documentation. Don't bring money, a wallet, personal possessions to work with you and watch what you say. So sorry that you and your coworkers are having to deal with this woman. Good luck! Joey

Wow, I didn't realize it was that serious. Most of what I know about her comes from the other people in my dept. I don't know if any of them have talked to our supervisor about her. I think I'll talk to one of the Sisters about her cause I'm not sure my supervisor would listen to me. And if something happens, at least they were warned. We had a guy who was the truck driver for the food service dept.--the first time I met him, my immediate reaction was:he looks like a rapist! I had nothing to base it on. He worked for about a year and then made the front page. Turns out he was on parole, after doing time for killing someone, was a sex offender, and had stolen and cashed checks from the woman who was sponsoring him. He took off and as far as I know, he's still out there. yeah, everyone deserves a second chance, until they stick it to someone again. I know that's not very nice but homicide and rape and stealing aren't very nice either.

Yes I have had to work with a couple of questionable people. I have learned to document the facts, keeping the emotion out, so that I can at least protect myself and my career that I have worked so hard to get to where I am.

I hope all goes ok for you Cindy. How annoying to have to work with a silly girl like that. It is so sad that it is so hard to find good CNAs. My daughter was a CNA and she and I took care of my Mom and then my Dad 24-7 for a year before they died. I think CNAs are heros! Thank you to all you lovely ladies that work in health care. And btw Cindy I'm a self proclaimed hillbilly. LOL! Wouldn't have it any other way. We am what we am.

I talked to my supervisor today. she said someone else had already told her so she's aware of the situation. So I think it's going to be OK. I wondered why the new girl has been so quiet today and yesterday.I had a friend who was a CNA and he was working towards becoming an RN. He had a past history of drug use, and he said his biggest fear was that if he had access to drugs, he might be tempted to use them. He moved away and we lost touch so I don't know how he's doing now. But that would be hard, especially if you were feeling tired or stressed, to avoid taking advantage of the easy access to drugs. the last I heard of him, he'd gotten married and they had a son. I hope he's doing well and has stayed sober.
