I LOVE my mixed...but the ice cream mixer sucks! I can't get the paddle assembly to stay seated in the top assembly. The last time I made ice cream in it, the paddle stayed assemblied for the first 12 minutes, then it made a horrible noise as it unseated. Today I could not get the thing to stay on at all and ended up using my wire whisk to mix in the freezer bowl.
Has anyone else had problems or am I just crazy, unmechanical, or too old to handle power tools without supervision? I'm ready to ditch the ice cream maker and either buy hubby premium ice cream or an expensive counter top maker that I don't have do anything more complicated than pour in the ice cream custard. plug it in and flip the switch.

I have been looking at getting one for a while now, but just haven't jumped on it yet. We have one where we keep the bowl in the freezer and then just pop the lid and paddle on, plug it in and pour the ingredients in. I keep thinking the KA mixer one is a similar concept which is why we haven't bought the one for the mixer.
I've heard of a few people who have had problems with it though so maybe I should just stick with what we already have. Doesn't take up too much space.
Hopefully, someone else here can give you some help...

I'm glad you posted this. It's a good heads-up, as I was thinking about getting the attachment for my Kitchen-aid.

Wendy, the ice cream bowl needs to be frozen before you pour in the ice cream mixture. I'm going to look for another machine. I don't mind using a bowl that needs to be frozen but I'm not going to battle my machine everytime I try to make ice cream. Hubby has a bowl every night before bed...yes, he's spoiled and he deserves to be but I'm not willing to go to this much trouble to make it.
Any suggestions on what I can buy to replace mine, I'd appreciate them.

Have you tried contacting kitchen aid? The One time I had a problem with my mixer they fixed it ASAP. I've never tried the ice cream maker attachment though

Alee, I'm calling them tomorrow. I'm sure they'll try to make things right but I don't think the hassle to make ice cream with the attachment is really worth it. The bowl needs to be frozen at least overnight, the mixture needs to be chilled for at least 8 hours before it can be put into the bowl to be churned and then the ice cream needs to cure and harden for 2 to 4 more hours unless you want soft serve. That's up to two days to make a batch and since hubby wants French vanilla, it costs twice as much to make 2 quarts than it does to purchase 2 gallons of premium ice cream.

Can you make the mixture and let it set in the fridge while you freeze the bowl? But you are right- it sounds like a lot of work!

Yes, that's what I've done most times but it's still a lot of work and the kind of ice cream dh wants in very expensive to make. When he was making a 6 figure salary, it was no big deal but we're living on a retiree's income and we don't have much extra money for such extravagant things. He's spoiled and I was the one who did it. I was thinking of buying a different brand of maker but decided against it.
BTW, I called KitchAid and they said to send the part that I was having problems with and they'd send me a new one. I asked if they had changed the design from when I purchases the maker and they said no...there was nothing wrong with the design. My question is, "Why would I want a new apparatus that was the same as the non-functioning one?"

Oh no! I just got one of those delivered in the mail (rebate). It was free just for buying the mixer. I haven't used it yet but will certainly keep an eagle eye on it when I do. I've got a Cuisinart ice cream maker if this doesn't work. Thanks for the heads up.
