We had a violin shipped to us from Ebay last week and through a conversation with the seller it came up that she had trouble shipping it because when she got to the post office, they told her you can no longer write an address directly on the box/package, you HAVE to put a label on. I told her I'd never heard that before, but she said that it is some new thing the post office was doing. Has anyone ever heard of this before? I've always written right on the package and never had a problem.

Better to write it on the package that way they can't tell you they lost the label. If they won't take it, I would suggest doing both. And make it legible.

O, a trouble's a ton or a trouble's an ounce,
Or a trouble is what you make it!
And it isn't the fact that you're hurt that counts,
But only--how did you take it?

I have never heard that before. I guess until they enforce it here, mine will stick be written on the box. Too easily lost if label comes off. Maybe it is your particular post office? I know even though it's a federal run place, any given post office can choose to be more particular than another. :)

I do a LOT of shipping and I have never heard of a requirement of labels instead of writing directly on the package does that include letters too? I don't use labels because they come off half the time but I like the idea of doing both!! Writing on the package and labeling it!

That is news to me too! Just mailed one w/handwritten address about 3 days ago, without issue After some different experiences with other things in two different post offices here I KNOW that sometimes it is a "local" post office thing. However, I think writing and labeling both are good ideas.

Well I mailed out quite a few RAOKs today and the post master never said a thing to me about the packages I had written on. Hmmmm....I do still think the writing and labeling is a good suggestion!

Good for a heads up. If it is anything like the bank, they will "test" new policies on certain market areas to see how well it goes, is it too much hassel to change, does the lost/return rate go down etc. Maybe she is in a test region?

Never heard of that-I always print my labels thru Paypal and tape them to the package. Let me know if you need help with the fiddle once it arrives! I play some...

You can get accurate and up-to-date info at the US Postal Service website. Here's the page that deals directly with this issue. Nothing about a label being required. Maybe with Priority Mail and Express Mail it's different -- check the rest of the USPS site to see.
