Ok as most of you know this is a 2 room well built shed I will be living in off grid starting at the end of Sept for a year...well today I realized since i can't paint it inside since I will be hanging tarps, blankets & huge rugs on the walls....it will be very boring...so with all of you fancy trailer girls who decorate the insides & outsides of your trailers maybe you could give me some ideas for a very small place to make it more homie in feel...
I will only have a rocking chair...a bed that I will build up high on the wall for storage under it, a antique sewing machine with folding chair & a ironing board that converts to a step ladder..........I will hang my enamel pots & pans from the high ceiling out of the way...I am also putting in one window by the rocking chair so I have a look out for watching the snow, rain & so on....
So I need your creative thinking caps on for both inside & out...I am going to make next spring a barn quilt for it when I have the extra time & am tired of tearing down things & cleaning out barns...
Now remember this has to be on the cheap & with things I may already have or can make from things I have... I do plan to use one of my cool aprons as a window curtain but other than that have no ideas right now....
also to decorate the outside of the truck camper for the chicken coop ideas......

Michele, I am glad you feel the need the decorate your space. It would be a long winter looking at tarp covered walls. Put up the tarps, but cover them with something. I once covered 2 walls in a basement bedroom with clear plastic covered with pinch pleated, lined drapes. The drapes came from a thrift store and cost me less than $10 for all of them. They were darker than I wanted, but looked cozy and made the room much warmer. I used caulking and stuck a 1x4 to the top of the wall against the ceiling, and stapled the plastic and the drapes to the board. Around here big pinch pleated drapes are always in thrift stores and yard sales for cheap. They wouldn't even have to be the same, just something that looked good together.
Keep them away from your wood stove. Some friends had a small wood stove in an trailer, they put up galvanized roofing tin behind the stove. They set the tin out a couple of inches from the wall. It looked and worked great. I know you will make your home cozy, comfy, and warm.

I forgot to add I am taking fire board to put under the wood stove & behind it...I have a bunch of free heavy duty tiles that look like rock that will be cemented & grouted for the floor where the wood stove is.....this is for extra protection plus adding a bit of warmth if the fire should go out during the night.....I really like the drape idea specially for over & around the bed plus that would work great to hide the stuff under the bed as well...thank you for the idea...I have tons of fabrics & many with chickens on it so that would cheer me up big time.....also forgot to add the wooden ironing board/step ladder will serve as my table & to climb into my bed....Michele'

I agree with the curtain/drapes idea. Maybe some lace. Cheap glass oil lamps can be found in thrift stores and they are pretty. Instead of eating on your ironing board, could you attach a small table size piece of wood to the wall? You could have it fold down and attach 2 support legs on the sides. When you're done you could fold it back up onto the wall and you could also attach a mirror to it. That would look pretty. Even if you don't want to look at yourself all the time, mirrors are great for reflecting light. I like your ideas of making sure everything is multipurpose.

ohhhh love the idea of pretty pillows & a quilt over the rocking chair...I have the one my mom made me when i was 16 i am taking & that would be perfect for it since its in yellows & reds............I am taking 2 oil lamps with me as well as battery operated candles...but will have to find a mirror as thats a great idea for reflecting light...good ideas hens...Michele'

You have to have some nice colorful wool throw rugs for the floor. And some white shelves for the walls with lace doily things. But with wood heat you know you'll have lots of dust all over.

The dollar stores have lots of things for decorations, too. If you crochet, doilies can be had for $1 and then you add on, or leave simple.
Also, if you need lots of fabric, look at sheets. Wmart has cheap sheets in a myriad of colors and designs. I was at a yard sale the other day and a lady had LOTS of partial sheet sets because she had used the flats for this and that. These were still in the boxes, not previously used...

Lots of good ideas here about loft beds http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images?_adv_prop=image&fr=ffds1&va=loft bed ideas from old bunk beds. Some have storage underneath, some have an office, some a sitting area, lot of these are for children but lots of good ideas to get some extra space. I've seen old bunk beds for free on freecycle or really cheap on craigslist and you seem to have skills to do this kind of stuff. I like the idea of the pinch pleated drapes and alot of those are thermal lined too which would help insulate your new little home. I hope you get this thing cozied up before cold weather.
I think you are one brave lady and I hope you get things figured out in the coming year. It sounds like fun to me and you may not want to leave.

If you want mirrors simply install hooks in the ciling aprocimily where you want the mirrors to be and hang with funky twine or pritty ribbon. you could even add visual interest simpy by haning a square mirror at the corner so it's a dimond shap

If you can keep the inside of your home in lighter colors, it will make your space appear larger; dark colors tend to make a space look smaller. Mirrors can make a room appear larger too depending on their placement. I like the idea of a quilt on one of the walls as a focal point.

No matter what I do it will be pretty dark since it will only have the one window I put in plus I think its all of 8 ft by 12 ft or so....but I do have a cool partly done huge rug I am thinking of putting on the wall behind the bed for extra warmth & to have a soft wall to bump into...will be on a twin bed...lol..I do have a few of the square mirrors you glue to a wall that would work well there...can liquid nail them to the tarps on the walls & put up small shelves for the oil lamps & that way the light will reflect farther....plus that will keep the oil lamps up & out of the way & safer in such a small space....I have battery operated candles that will go on a small shelve above the bed area..too dangerous to have an oil lamp up there where I can bump it in the night....I will be hanging alot of my old white enamel pots & pans which will help plus my 1940's table cloth & old apron made into a temp curtain...I hope to also bring a few framed pics of family to have there with me on shelves....
I don't plan to stay in there much unless the snows are really bad & I can't get to a barn to work..but once the spring hits I have that netting you put over doors so I will be using that with the doors opened to bring in lots of fresh air & light when in there.....But since it will be more like camping once the weather is nice I doubt I will be in there except to sleep......
I am headed up there again the 10th-11th of Sept with my 2 sisters to measure the shed so I know exactly what room I have...how high the roof is inside & so on....plus little sis & I will be tearing the truck camper molded rotted wood out of it & treating it for the mold so it will be ready for me to work on once I get moved there....Since the coop (trailer) is small I plan to decorate the outside of it with wooden & metal chicken signs, chicken flags & a plastic mailbox for them...it will be near ground level so they can climb into it if they want.....I am also decorating the outside of the shed when I can & putting out some of the solar yard lights I have here there so it won't be so dark at night when I go out to potty or check on the chickens....thank you hens for all the great ideas...love them & its had my mind going crazy with ideas....Michele'

I think a calender with picures you enjoy will be helpful, and a simple batt. operated clock is a must have! Knowing the date and the time will help you (or it would help me) feel less "lost" during the winter. And prehaps a nice indoor plant, it could even be a herb.

You could crochet rag rugs for the floor- and if you do make/use a shelf get one of those floor length mirrors from Walmart- they are about $5 right now, and you can lay it on it's side at the back of the shelf- then you can put your oil lamps or candles in front of it. Not only will it give the visiual look of more space, but by putting a mirror behind your light source you are reflecting more light out into the room.
Also you can get battery powered or solar powered christmas lights that you could tack up to the ceiling so you could have more lightinging/twinkle lights some nights :)

instead of batt clock I would get a winding clock so you don't have to worry about batteries, and such going out and the expense of them as well.

hi hens...taking a wall clock as well as my necklace pocket watch with me...mainly I will be living like the old timers/farmers...sleep with the dark & up with the sun bit.....bringing tons of batteries with me for my camera & walkman player....The clock I am taking runs for about 3 yrs on 2 batteries so good there...the plant idea is great...have tons of aloe I use & grow so will take a few of the smaller ones with me to look at, care for & use if needed......Michele'
