We just put a deposit on a hog that is scheduled to be butchered after Thanksgiving. We're buying from a former farm girl - although she doesn't know it yet. Figure we'll talk when we visit the farm to pick out the pig we want. Hubby has been talking to her husband.
The kids are really excited about being able to select which one we get. We're researching what cuts we want and what we want smoked. Sure hope my freezer will hold a whole pig and half a cow. Good thing I defrosted and emptied it!
Any helpful hints for pork cuts? What are your favorites? I'm looking forward to tenderloin and ham steaks. Should I get my ham smoked or fresh? Or both perhaps?

i know it ssounds like alot of meat, but i had 2 cows in a 10 cubic foot freezer. CONGRATS tho farm raised tastes so much better!

| Yum! We do the grass fed beef thing but no pigs :( Congrats to you! Not only are the health benefits great, but kudos to you for giving your kids the experience as well! |

I don't know if it's appropriate to ask, but just how much does it cost to purchase a nice cow or pig? Do they butcher and package it too? If you don't want to reply with a post, I'd welcome a PM. Thanks!

we just had 2 of my sons 4-H pigs butchered, we sold 1/2 of 1, so I have 1 1/2 pigs in my freezer. It is great to have on hands...I grew up having beef in the freezer & I missed not having a variety of meat anytime I wanted it. I did ground pork & pork cutlets along with the other stuff. I didn't do ham only because we arent' big ham eaters. I think next year though, I will do ham steaks instead...I think we would use that more. YOu will be so glad to have the meat...the bacon is out of this world...there is actually meat & not just fat! Enjoy! Beth |
