I'm not from Colorado and have no plans on visiting anytime soon. Can you imagine what that's going to be like now? Every "stoner" in the country will flock to Colorado-I think I'd pack up and move....far, far away.

Well, I am a Colorado girl, born and raised here and live here. I don't plan to move but I'm disappointed in this passing. The promoters did acknowledge they have huge federal hurdles to get over. . . we'll see.
I know what I'll do if they come pestering me, mine and my neighborhood . . .
I'm sorry for Colorado too, my home state that I love!

I'm in CO and I don't plan to move. Medical mj has been legal here for a couple of years (in Co. Springs)and the world hasn't come to an end. Besides, all the pot heads were already here. Just another day in Paradise, aka the Stoner State.
The gov. made a statement this morning about the hurdles and told everyone to not break out the Cheetoes and Goldfish just yet.

We have 'medical' marijuana here (yeah, riiiiight) and it's kind of funny. The guys growing it are always looking over their shoulders. We've cut off some friendships because it makes us nervous to be associated with them. The Fed statutes are still on the books, I think. Some guy in Grants Pass was busted for shipping his med mari, in furniture no less, to the east coast.

Melina, thanks for levity! While I don't use recreational drugs, I'd really
rather it be legal than have all these minor drug offenders taking up space in jails over severe criminals--harsher sentences for pot possession than sex offenders and child murderers? Give me a break--THAT'S something wrong in this country. And, not to mention Hemp could go back to being a really profitable farm crop.

They say we're just the "first state" to do it . . . and, Melina is right. They're already here. My little town isn't very big but what goes on here and has for years . . nuttin' new under the sun!
When put in perspective with all the other HORRIBLE stuff that has happened in my beloved state it puts a different spin on marijuana use.

Roxanna, it's really true. Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio have a great climate for hemp growing, and at one time (civil war to late 1800's), Kentucky was one of the largest exporters of hemp for maritime use. It's a great green crop and the fiber is a great competitor of cotton (which is a whole other box of worms as to why it's "illegal", frankly)

So, now, guess what's gonna happen?

You know the bumper stickers from Mary Janes Farm we get . . the "Certified Farmgirl" and "'Plouwin' Through" farmgirl stickers?
They have the www.maryjanesfarm.org web address on them as well

I have one or the other in the back window of my car and have, more than once, seen people back up and take a second look. Now, they're gonna REALLY take a second look . . or a third . . . or . .

(When I worked at the middle school and kids brought it to school we called it "mary jane")

Apparently there are many others out there that call it "mary jane" as well. Some time ago I received an email with a list of terms that USED to have different meanings according to cowboys, that now have new, much less desirable meanings. I don't recall all of them but I do remember the cowboy saying that, "if you're gonna bring 'Mary Jane' around, she better be a good-looking woman and she'd better be packing a pistol!" I laughed!
And, I forwarded that entire email to our own Mary Jane thinking she just might get a farmgirl giggle or two out of it.

I'm just ornery and creative enough to come up with some comebacks . . . I could have some fun with it, don't you think!

I do think you could! I'd love to have that cowboy list if you run across it again. That's funny!

Mary Jane--the anglicized version of "Marijuana". Makes sense. People around here call it skunkweed--I'm so naive that I had to ask someone "why" and they looked at me like I was crazy. A few years back, before my husband and I were married, I told him that I love the smell of gasoline and don't think skunk smells that bad and he asked me if I was sure I wasn't "a stoner..."

I met up with some folks in New Mexico several years ago and they referred to marijuana as "locoweed".

Melody, I did. Just not far enough. All the liberals flocked to Colorado several years ago when the economy was booming. They sold their million dollar homes in California (or where ever) came to Colorado, bought the brand new mega mansions, ruined the quality of life that us natives enjoyed. Starbucks on every corner, all the chain restaurants you can shake a stick at. Traffic congestion that rivals California...DH and I couldn't take it anymore so we moved to the least populated state in the nation. But it's still too close to the pot smoke wafting up from the medical marijuana shops they passed a couple of years ago. Now I guess you wont' need those fake doctors to write you a fake prescription so you can smoke marijuana so you can ease the suffering you are under for your hangnail. You can legally smoke it anywhere now (in the state).

That's OK, Wyoming has long took great pleasure in pulling Colorado cars over on the interstate. I can just imagine they are laying in wait for the dope heads who venture across the border with their pot!

But I'm not bitter.

Audrey

I am only worried about the potential for more accidents and deaths from people driving under the influence. That would be a very tragic turn.

The pot grown these days and some of the synthetic stuff is not the same pot from the 70s. Maybe if it is legalized the potency can be monitored and it wont be dangerous. Some of the stuff that is called pot these days can be deadly. Pot is a medicinal herb and good for nausea and the fact that it is administered by being smoked is why it works so well. A person doesn't have to try to swallow it and keep it down like a pill. But it is being exploited and people claim they need it for everything they can think of, just because they want to get high, thats wrong. Im a native New Mexican and we call it pot here not loco weed. Unless its a joke I guess, or a parent trying to make an impression on their kids. I used to smoke pot and I praise God for delivering me from the addiction to it. Along with tobacco. 25+ years now. It rots the brain. I can spot an old pothead a mile away they have a thickheaded look about them, and I thank God again because (but for the grace of God go I) However I will say that when my 80 yr old mother was taking chemo when she had colon cancer, and very sick and frail, I would have went and found her a joint in a heartbeat if I thought she would have smoked it. It really is a medicinal herb, but not for all the silly stuff people claim it helps. Pleeeeze! But in short Colorado is a beautiful state in spite of the liberal invasion, and I doubt people will be flocking there to smoke pot legally because it probably won't be long before it's legal everywhere. There were some other states that legalized it last night too. Medical pot has been legal in New Mexico for quite some time. One has to carry a prescription paper with them from a Dr. And I think there is a limit on the amount one can possess. There are a few legal certified growers, but it isn't regulated where one gets it. Sort of a don't ask don't tell type thing. What is scary is the smoke shops that have a smorgasbord of different pot. There are a lot of those in CA. Synthetic and dusted included. Potent stuff! And totally unregulated. I say certify growers, regulate it and tax it. Get serious about it. I also think there is some concern about people driving while stoned. I hope they regulate that too. However I would rather be on the road with a stoney than a drunk any day. In my opinion alcohol is the worst drug.

Before we go any further though......there are distinct differences btwn the stuff that is smoked and the stuff grown for industrial use.

They are two different strains/two different " species" of hemp. One being Indiga, one being Sativa. One you will get stoned, one you can smoke and will be sick before ever getting even the slightest iota of a buzz (you don't get buzzed from smoking pot incidentally)

The folks who stigmatize this stuff haven't done their research enough to realize the benefits: paper, cloth, rope. Plus, it is far moe ststainable than growing trees for paper pulp and grows much faster too!

And I have to say, as far as the true use for medicinal. Talk to anyone who has ever had cancer and been sick enough to try anything to make them feel like wanting to eat or think about food. Yes, there is the synthetic Marinol, but it's not as effective. SOme cancer patients have recponded well to pot smoking to qell their nausea, some- it has made them feel worse. It effects people differently the same way alcholol does.

The dispenseries are regulated heavily as are the growers. They are also taxed. Which BTW is the only reason why pot (and moonshine) remains illegal. Big government just wants their cut.

I did help pass law in California back in '97 for medicinal use simply becasue I lost a frined to AIDS, and when a body is in pain and suffering, what have you got to loose.

As far as the "stoners" and bad guys out there...........there's always somebody who will ruin it for the other guys- sorry to say
