So my DH and I were listening to our State Song on the way to Alabama. We were discussing if they had changed it a couple of years ago. So i pulled it up on my phone and they had not. So we listened to it and sang along and just got to laughing about it. It is such a dreary and depressing song. Swanee River.... Hum What is your State Song?

Funny, I always thought ours was "California Here I Come", but I think I was remembering old I Love Lucy reruns....LOL. It's actually "I Love you California"....hmmm.

I didn't even know we had a state song till I just went and looked it up... Needless to say its a very obscure tune that no one knows the words for... LOL! Thanks for thought about the song... I would have never known about it otherwise!

Louisiana has two state songs; "Give Me Louisiana" and "You are My Sunshine". I've never heard the first song, but I know the second song. Marly

I love to go to College football games because they always play our state song.. "On, Wisconsin!" The song always gets the crowd going.

Our state song is of course, And Here We Have Idaho. It is a pretty song, written by a woman, and our state seal was designed by a woman. One line of the song is, Silver and gold in the sunlight's gleam, and romance lies in her name. I love the song, we sang it all the time in grade school, and our ladies club sings it a couple of time a year.
Greetings from the morning side of the hill. |

Our state song is "My Old Kentucky Home", which is lovely--well the parts that they sing that are time appropriate. Written by Stephen Foster, some verses have...um....past language that is incredibly derogatory to African Americans. When we learned it for our 3rd grade operetta, the music teacher mistakenly gave us all the verses on a handout and she spent HOURS trying to get out of explaining what some of those words meant.

I live in Oregon, not my native state. The state song here is Oregon, My Oregon, for which I don't know the words.
I'm a native of Ohio, and I do know the state song and the words. The state song for Ohio is Beautiful Ohio and it's definitely a beautiful song.

Wyoming Written by C.E. Winter Composed by G.E. Knapp
I
In the far and mighty West, Where the crimson sun seeks rest, There's a growing splendid State that lies above, On the breast of this great land; Where the massive Rockies stand, There's Wyoming young and strong, the State I love!
Chorus
Wyoming, Wyoming! Land of the sunlight clear! Wyoming, Wyoming! Land that we hold so dear! Wyoming, Wyoming! Precious art thou and thine! Wyoming, Wyoming! Beloved State of mine!
II
In the flowers wild and sweet, Colors rare and perfumes meet; There's the columbine so pure, the daisy too, Wild the rose and red it springs, White the button and its rings, Thou art loyal for they're red and white and blue.
III
Where thy peaks with crowned head. Rising till the sky they wed, Sit like snow queens ruling wood and stream and plain; 'Neath thy granite bases deep, 'Neath thy bosom's broadened sweep, Lie the riches that have gained and brought thee fame.
IV
Other treasures thou dost hold, Men and women thou dost mould; True and earnest are the lives that thou dost raise, Strengthen thy children though dost teach, Nature's truth thou givest to each, Free and noble are thy workings and thy ways.
V
In the nation's banner free There's one star that has for me A radiance pure and splendor like the sun; Mine it is, Wyoming's star, Home it leads me near or far; O Wyoming! All my hear and love you've won!

"Where the Columbines grow" by A.J. Flynn is the offical Colorado State song.
In the '90s, some grade school kids wanted to try and get it changed to "Rocky Mountain High" by John Denver.

Apparently our State song is "Washington, My Home." The lyrics look nice, but I have no idea what it sounds like! Marianne |

I don't know all the words, but ours starts out:"By the rivers gently flowing, Illinois, Illinois..." We do have lots of rivers. It's a pretty tune. cindy

Iowa's is "The Iowa State Song" Most people believe it is "Ioway", but not so. My school class sings it at least once a week! It is to the traditional melody--"O Christmas Tree" Very pretty song, and super meaningful.
If it's not illegal, unsafe, or immoral, why not try anything once? Who knows? You may come back for a second helping! |
