Yes freezing before the day is over here too. The whole 2 or 3 I get. We would have to be careful about them freezing in transit too.

My favorite of the geese breeds you have is the buff. Baby geese and ducks are so soft and cute, and geese live a long time and are very intelligent. Let me know how things are going in March or so, Thank you Teri. Also by march I may have some chicken eggs to barter if you like to hatch things. My daughter raises these beautiful cochin easter egger crosses, and I collect a variety of chickens, I just hatch the eggs and see what I get. And thank you for the wonderful soap. I sent off a card but thanks double Hon!

I love the maran eggs also just got a pullet eggs the first for this years. Nice and choc. brown. I have been working with this breed for 3 years know trying to just hatch the darkest eggs.I keep 10 chicks that I hatched and ended up with 8 roosters. I did finally get a few more hens with the next hatch. This spring I'm getting a different lineage as I traded a pair of the sussex for hatching eggs. As for crosses I crossed an easter egger with my lavender an I now have a lavender hen with check tuffs but I think she is the one laying the mauve eggs in the coop. I was hoping for a lavender hen that laid blue eggs. My coronation sussex lay a very pretty mauve egg also. I was SHOCKED when I looked at a hatchery in IL. down by where my son goes to college they wanted $100.00 for a month old pair of the sussex. I also have runner ducks and I keep you posted when I could ship eggs. Weather here if frightful the high was -4 and I didn't even want to see the windchill factor.

What do you have to do to hatch your own eggs? We've thought about doing that, but wasn't sure how to go about it. We have a tiny little incubator - holds 3 eggs I think. It would have to be better than ordering day olds - Ordered from Meyer and half of the first shipment died because they forgot to put the heat pack in. Then lost about half of the replacement shipment. I wasn't very happy. I still don't understand why it took 2.5 days to get chicks from 4 hours away!

The small 3 egg incubator is what stared my chicken hobby. It was my daughters 2nd grade science project she is now 26. I have raised chickens sense then but got into the hard to find breeds. When you order chicks make sure everything is set for when they show up like don't wait until they arrive to turn on the heat bulb. They like it to be already warm and cozy. Add some sugar or electrolytes to their water and not cold or hot water. As for shipping I and my friend had problems with one hatchery it always took 3 days for them to arrive. They shipped on Wednesdays but I think it was in the afternoon and chicks didn't get here until Saturday. My friend gave up with them after shipping and replacing shipping she end up with 2 live chicks out of 45.

The biggest difference I have noticed in the ordered chicks and the ones hatched at home incubator or setting hen is that the ordered chicks tend to waterlog themselves. I don't know why they do that. They just gobble up water and don't eat, then become real fat and sqishy with water and die. Maybe its because they are coming from Iowa a humid climate to NM a dry climate and it's hard for them to acclimate. Whenever I order them I always feed them first and leave feed in there and only put the water in long enough to give them all 7 dips then take it out and never leave it in there. The black chicks are worse about it. I also have to sprinkle mashed boiled egg and a little sugar on the chick starter or they wont eat it much. I never have any of these problems with homegrown chicks. Maybe something missing in their instincts. Weird.

Where I live the chicks usually arrived chilled. The best chicks I ordered were shipped with the green grow gel stuff. It keeps them hydrated and contains vitamins for them. They sent extra and all arrived safe with no losses of any of them. One company even when I wanted to pay extra for this and a heat pack didn't offer these items. They had to pay to resend 25 chicks I think it would be worth while to have these items available.

I could use some hatching eggs as well. Any kind! I especially love banties and easter eggers but honestly, I just love chickens! If you have some to offer up, please let me know if you are interested in any of the books, CDs, DVDs, Wii game, etc. I recently listed in this forum.

Thank you!
