We went on a picnic/hike on Saturday at our local nature preserve. Justin, always with that Ipad taking photos fell back a long the trail to take some photos. When Violet went back to get him, he was lying on the ground taking pictures (you know, always a perfect shot!!! )

When we got home, he did his usual editing to see if he'd captured anything good and came running out of the house to where Violet and I were planting pansies and said, "I'm so creeped out right now!!!!"

Can you see why?

That old adage is true--"if it was a snake, it would have bit me!!!" I'm sure glad it didn't

O, a trouble's a ton or a trouble's an ounce,
Or a trouble is what you make it!
And it isn't the fact that you're hurt that counts,
But only--how did you take it?

I have no idea, Denise--it's creepy, though, right? Especially that he didn't even know he was lying right on top of it with his camera!!!
I was going to look and see what types of snakes are native (other than the black rat and garter snake). We have quite a few here, but this was in a deep wood near the river, so they have different "inhabitants" :)

I love snakes! The whole thing kind of made me giggle....only because Justin didn't get bitten. I can see Justin enjoying all of natures beauty, snapping away trying to get some great shots. Everything is fine and dandy until he goes to edit. Would have loved to see the look on his face when he realized he had an unwelcome guest. Well, now he has a great picture with an even better story behind it!

I don't mind them, but they do give me a start initially--I just figure they're as afraid of me as I am of them so I respect their boundaries :)...it is pretty funny, though, Emily Anna and he came running out of that house yelling, "Jon, Jon!!!! I'm so creeped out right now!!! You gotta look at this!"

I'm sure that snake is thinking, "of course, the first warm day of the year when I'm out here, minding my own business, along come the nature lovers!"

Hey Jonni, here is a snake id page. You live in Kentucky right?

I like snakes, but I'm still awfully glad that none of you were bit by it!

I've tried using the link Annika gave, but I don't see "anyone" who looks like this guy. Could be it's a juvenile or just been down under the ground for too long and doesn't have his "tan" yet...either way, yes, hje's a fat bugger, Mary Beth, but Marlee, there's no way this guy tops some of your snakes in Louisiana--at least, the ones I DO NOT want to see :)

I bet Justin will look around a bit more carefully before having a photo session There was the time that I was camping and I went behind a bush for a ~ ahem ~ moment of privacy, and there was this HUGE rattler laying on a sunny log. I decided that I would find another bush far, far from this one and I don't think I've ever ran so fast in my life!

Annika, I'm afraid that pee would have crawled right back up inside of me right quick! I am sometimes so paralyzed by fear, though, that I can't move. I would hope that, if caught in that situation, I could have hightailed it out of those woods!

Yes, I think when in the woods from now on out, he'll be a little more aware of his surroundings!

Only snakes we have in Maine are nonvenomous ...grass and garter but still wouldn't want to get bitten by one. Don't want infection. My gsp dog is death on snakes. One observation ...have you ever noticed that all mammals hate snakes? Dogs, cat's, horses, birds (nonmammalian) etc. Quite interesting if you believe in the garden of Eden.

Lorena, that is an interesting observation. My old husky, Lily, used to always try to catch the garter snakes, but they would "curl" up in her mouth and it would freak her out and she would drop them. Personally, I've noticed a few "new" types around our house of late and that gives me the creeps.

We have venemous snakes in Kentucky, but they are largely relegated to the lower Eastern and Western parts of the state, and near the rivers. Cottonmouth being the most prevalent. I too would hate to get bit by them.
