Sheila - I had been searching and waiting for so long, and we just picked up the All American Sun Oven. Can't wait to try it out. I hope you can find a good second-hand one from one of our farmgirl sisters! Good luck!

Darlene - a sun or solar/sun cooker/oven is, in the simplest of terms, basically a dark, insulated box with a glass lid and reflective plates that you place out in the sun to cook with - you don't need gas, propane, electric, coal or wood... It just uses the sunlight. Totally portable, you can use it any season, any weather, as long as you can get direct sunlight - it uses the light from the sun, not its heat. You can cook pretty much anything in it that you can bake in the oven or cook on the stove, as well as use it as a dehydrator (even boils water!)! I have wanted one for so long. You don't need to buy one, though. There are plenty of instructions out there online that will tell you how to make a simple one from items you already have at home. We made one years ago when my son was little and it was awesome. We decided to buy one, though, because in the summertime our kitchen is just so unpleasant due to the heat that we know we will use it daily. I make our bread from scratch, so this little gem will be a Godsend in the hot weather! If the current unusually warm weather we're experiencing here in April is any indicator of what is to come this summer, boy am I going to be glad we have it! I can't wait! :)

Hugs -

You bake bread in it, Neat! I think I remember something like that from Boy Scouts.
I don't know how much I would get it to bake here because the sun is lacking alot sometimes. I would have to go to the hills to get some sun.
Thank you Nini for telling me what it is.

You're welcome, Darlene! You can bake a whole turkey in it, if you want to! LOL!

I just wish I had thought to ask our farmgirls if they had one to barter for - DUH!!! I never had even thought to ask! Sheila - you ROCK!!! :)

LOL! Weeeellll... Let's just say one thing I like about it is that supposedly you can't burn foods in it. ;) For me, it may be a year-round bread thing! LOL! I'll keep you posted, though. Hugs - Nini

Baking bread outside in hot weather? Not paying for power? I want one of those! In science club at the local school the kids made simple solar hot dog cookers, it was great!

Here's an easy-looking DIY for a solar oven: http://www.instructables.com/id/Best-Solar-Oven/?ALLSTEPS . I might give it a try when I find some spare time. (HA!)

I have a sun oven and am going to use it more this summer. I am still in the experimental stage. Our pastor has baked our bread for communion with hers. I want to get where I can bake bread and casseroles in it. I have been collecting small dark roasters and covered dishes to use. The inside of the sun oven is not huge so need smaller pans. We are only two people and is just right for us. I do have a condensation problem on the glass when cooking something. Does anyone know how to remedy this? My oven does not get as hot as I would like it to. It still cooks, but want a hotter oven. Any suggestions?
