It all started with a cookie cutter...
Old and dull silver with a worn red wooden handle, a slightly dented heart. I was instantly in love. Then I inherited an old potato masher and flour sifter...I found more cookie cutters and am on the hunt for even more beloved constants of years gone by.
Drew found an egg beater but it's in wacky condition and I'll need to find a sturdier one. No electrical wonder can compare to the whirl of an eggbeater or the shunk shunk of a flour sifter. When I use these old kitchen implements I somehow feel like the food that I'm making is more real...funny really. Certainly food processors and bread machines are much faster, but I like the extra time spent in the kitchen with my old toys.
I readily confess to being a real food snob,but part of the joy of being a food snob is in the preparation and art of cooking. I feel in some way that the faster and more push a button style of cooking looses the soul of the food. It's a real joy and feeling of accomplishment to serve a meal that you crafted by hand. Maybe its just me, but it tastes so much better.
Now the only thing left to do is build more cabinets foe the collection

The memories that "old" kitchen tools and gadgets hold are amazing. I have my grandma's rolling pin with the painted green handles, and everytime I use it I daydream of baking with her.
I think your collection sounds amazing Annika!

I love anything "Old Timey" as my granny called it. She was born in 1899. We called her "Ma". I loved her and my mom so much and try to keep them alive in my kitchen. I have the old wooden rolling pin...many a dumpling and pie crust have been made with it. I have my granny's apron hanging in my kitchen. The old time white hutches...I have one in my kitchen also...belonged to my mom...and old time white metal kitchen cart where I display some of my "pretties"(ceramic rooster bakers and baskets). I am not sure what it is called but I have a very old emerald green bowl...use it for fruit salad and so did my mom. Some might not consider that my old stuff wouldn't be anything in the world where most want the best of everything. However, I do have the best of everything...memories of spending time with the 3 most wonderful ladies in the world(my sister...my mom and my granny)and having the kitchen treasures my mom and granny left me. I feel that I have it all. I also work in the same kitchen where those memories were made...as I inherited the home where I grew up! Great post Annika!

I love vintage kitchen items,I had a really nice collection of Fire king,Corningware and various other things but unfortunately I lost everything in our house fire so am just starting to build up my collection again.
The only things that survived were my good old cast iron skillets and pots,I always told my Daughter those things would be here long after I'm gone and now I think I treasure them more because it was so good to see something make it through that fire.
The thing I missed the most was my old cream colored Hoosier cabinet with the flour mill,I did find another one and it is very nice,probably nicer than the one I had but I would give anything for my old one back just because I treasured it for so many years.

Oh heavens- I have the addiction too. So many green and red handled tools, enamelware coffee pots, the old time sifters, the yellow ware bowls- so dear to me! I'm glad that I am not the only one with the passion for these treasures!!

I have the measuring spoons from my mom's house. I totally stole them when I set up housekeeping 40 years ago. She did not mind. They are metal and so well used but still get used all the time. They have a great patina, but they are indestructible. I also use my old sifter that I saw recently in a magazine as vintage! It is metal too. And I use the wood handled, and nickel ice cream scoop I got for 8 dollars back in 1975. It was old then. Love it!

Annika, I understand your addiction to these
wonderful little gadgets. I started with a hand mixer,
then years later I found the same small red handled heart cookie
cutter. I have added many more vintage gadgets since then. I use them all.
They make every meal taster better and make it a true labor of
love.

Hello ladies,
Love this conversation!! My kitchen has its share of old beloved gadgets too, that require no electricity and just good oldfashioned elbow grease and TIME. When we remodeled about 5 years ago, we took old wood from one of our BIG barns that came down, and used it as wainscoting, trimmed with rough-cut cedar. The effect is beyond cozy, and I used really old quilt blocks I bought at an auction for curtains. That setting is perfect for using the old egg beaters, dough cutter, and big yellow bowl that reminded me of the one my Mom make cakes out of when I was little.
I may be off on a tangent here, but when my father passed away last year, I found the most comfort wandering through antique stores, looking at old things and wondering what stories they held...still feel that way.
Now...if I can just figure out who's gonna inherit all these treasures after I walk on...

Hi Liz,
I think I know which yellow bowl you are talking about. I was able to get that yellow one and also save the smallest size blue bowl from that set when my mom passed away and have since found a pink medium size that goes with the other two. I saw the green one being used for holding the tickets at a drawing at a quilt guild meeting. Wonder if I could "borrow or barter" with them for that one? Hmmm....

I too am very fond of sentimental and "old timey" items. I have a collection of old Ball jars that were my great grandmother's. She used these to preserve goodies from her garden. I also have an old wooden spoon that was hand carved by my great grandfather. It is in amazing shape given it's age and amount of use it saw. (I don't use it for cooking now, I have it hanging on a hook in the kitchen.)
