I am working through the badges and the women at arms badge but I really prefer my bow. I hunt with my bow too. Getting 20 hours in at the rifle range isn't really that exciting but shooting my bow for 20 hours (it will take an awfully long time since I can only make it about 15 minutes at a time) would be great. I don't know if there are other archers out there but I would sure love a badge to add to my collection with a bow on it. or maybe if there isn't much interest consider a modification of women at arms to include archery? Thanks for considering the idea.

Hi Emily,
I'm going to save your idea for an archery badge in the future. For right now, I'm inclined to let you use your bow instead of a gun for this badge. Gun safety rules and regulations would still stand, plus listing of bow safety rules that differ from guns. Does that make sense? Email me (brianogle@maryjanesfarm.org) with any questions!

Wow, Emily, archery? Cool! Haven't done that since high school. I used to love it. Now you've got me wondering if I could get back into it. Any tips on how to choose good equipment? |

Emily, I'm with you. I do shoot a gun but only for target and self protection. I hunt with bow, shoot competition and if truth be known, I'd rather defend myself with a bow ;-).
You go girl! |

It seems to me that there may be enough interest to make an actual archery badge for our Sisterhood members. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not an expert at archery by any stretch of the imagination. If we were to loosely model this badge after the woman-at-arms badge (www.farmgirlsisterhood.org/badges-op-woman-at-arms.asp) do any of you have ideas for some Beginner, Intermediate and Expert requirements?
Are archery safety/training classes easily available? Should we have it focus on hunting at the end? How prevalent are archery competitions? Would a competition be a realistic part of this badge? We're working on new badges for 2015 so any input you can provide will help to make the badge a fun one to earn! |

That is an awesome Idea. I shoot but it has been a little while as I broke my arm/wrist. But will soon be back at it.

"Are archery safety/training classes easily available?" The answer to this is yes at least in most western states. Here in Colorado there is a state association of Bowhunters who offer safety classes for archery and bow hunting. " Should we have it focus on hunting at the end?" Yes and No. Hunting is really hunting when you use a bow but I think credit needs to be given for trying something more sustainable for hunting and compeitition. " How prevalent are archery competitions?" There are are a lot of local hunting/archery clubs here. They also perform community service projects. With movies like the Hunger Games and Olympics highlighting archery there should be world wide interest. Would a competition be a realistic part of this badge? Yes.
I would also suggest you include all types of bows....Compound, recurve and traditional. I would like to help out on creating this one!
