Oh my gosh! GIRLS! I came across this during the sleepless wee hours of my morning, and just HAD to share! If you go to YouTube, you’ll find a great how-to video by OurHalfAcreHomestead (just love that Mrs. Volfie!), http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iD_iEEEllec , which gives you easy step-by-step directions to make REUSABLE FOOD WRAP, using food grade beeswax and cotton cloth! A definite must see, must do!!! Super duper easy!!!

You can also go online and do a search and see several different – yet similar - ways to make these wraps as well. I’m including a link from mommypotamus.com so you can also see her rendition of “how-to” as well as her instructions for making the reusable food wrap into REUSABLE SNACK BAGS!!! http://www.mommypotamus.com/diy-reusable-food-wrap/

I AM SO DOING THESE!!! 'Just have to take a trip out to the health food store this week and find me some food grade beeswax!!! I just can’t wait! AWESOME!!! I will never cease to be amazed at just how creative people are!

Enjoy!

OMGoodness... I have to apologize... I didn't get my June/July MJF yet, so, unable to wait any longer, I picked it up in the grocery store today. Just read it (LOVED it, of course!) and saw that these were already in the issue! How embarrassing! Well... I guess we can just chalk it up to farmgirl minds thinking alike! LOL! Hugs - Nini

Oh Nini don't you just love halfacrehomestead.I have watched a few of her utube videos. The other lady I really like is Michigansnowpony she has alot of good info and videos. She is one of my favorites.

We have some beeswax and I am thinking of cutting up some old sheets and making some. I think old cotton sheets would work. Are you going to make some of these reusable food wraps or did you already make yours?

I'm going to have to check her out, Linda! I've never seen her! I came across ourhalfacrehomestead while looking for a how-to demonstration, and just loved her from day one. She's just so down to earth and funny - educational entertainment at its finest! :) I am very grateful to my son for encouraging me to give YouTube a whirl. I had no idea that there were videos like this out there! People are just so cool to share like this!

I haven't made these yet, but this is definitely one of my projects on the list. As soon as I'm finished canning this week, I'll be heading down to the health food store for the beeswax. I do have a little here, but I think I'll need more. I think you're right, though, about the old cotton sheets. My neighbor gave me a bunch of beautiful cotton sheets when his wife passed away. They're just so lovely and vintage that I hate to cut them down. But they're just sitting there, and I think they'd be great for these wraps - the small floral prints look so vintage and shabby chic, perfect for the picnic basket! We'll see. Guess we'll have to both try and compare notes, huh?! :) Such fun! I'm glad you're doing it, too! :)

Thanks for the links. I have been wanting to give this a try. I think the gingham was a great looking fabric to use for them. I like that country look! Though purposing is always a fun idea too.

You're welcome, Michele! I agree - I love the gingham. I think my guys would rather take their sandwiches to work in those rather than the vintage floral fabric from the sheets that I've been considering... ;)

Do you think you could use any other material like muslin? would cotton purchased from the store work? or might it be to heavy? I purchased some beeswax at the local orchard. how do I know if its food grade? I know its safe to use in making body salves. Sorry so many questions. (still trying to dry out my Mary Jane Magazines.)

thank you

Okay... Way out of my league on this one! LOL! I don't know what other fabric could be used, but I sure do know if I could make it with denim, my guys would be thrilled and an endless supply! LOL! I think the main thing is that the beeswax permeates the fibers, although I don't think you need to use a whole lot for it to do so. You don't want it so stiff that it cracks and flakes, you know? And I'm wondering if a heavier fabric might not be so easily bended and folded, either. Muslin isn't THAT heavy, though, is it? Not like denim. Yes, I think store bought cotton would be fine! I would probably wash and press it first, though. As far as food grade, when I purchase the beeswax at the health food store, it is labeled as food grade. I don't have a clue how else we would know... I guess I would have to ask. I'm way out of my league on that one, Danyel, I'm sorry! Maybe one of the other farmgirls could help us! OR if you check out the video from ourhalfacrehomestead, above, I bet you could add a question there in YouTube to hear Mrs. Volfie's take on it. Wouldn't have a clue how, but I'm sure you could! Let's see what we can find out - and share! :) Thanks for being so patient with me! Hugs - Nini

I don't know what food grade is either. The wax I have from my bees, I melt into bar form, and I will use that. Do they sell bees wax pearls or pellets or something like that? Maybe that would be the difference.
Ha ha Nini I don't think your guys would appreciate having the wraps made out of floral material! The plainer the better I bet!

LOL! I wonder if those bright orangey-red work rags are 100% cotton... Wouldn't THAT be a hoot in their lunchboxes! LOL! ;) As it stands, their work buddies are always eager to see what good things are in their lunchboxes... I'm going to have to really give these wraps a lot of thought, Michele! My son loves camo... My hubby loves choo-choos and the Pirates... BOTH are big Steeler's fans... With the right fabrics, this could be quite fun! :) I'm going to have to do some investigating!!! I just couldn't stand it anymore and had to look it up... Here's what I found out about food grade bees wax:

"All real beeswax is "food grade" unless it has had foreign substances mixed in. Consider that "comb honey" is a combination of beeswax and honey, and is certainly "food grade".

Having said that, wax from rendered brood comb, which may contain some amount of miticides/pesticides if you treat your bees would not be my choice for "food grade". Also note that you really don't know what is in foundation wax, unless that wax is exclusively from your own hives. "

Pretty interesting stuff, huh? :)

'Haven't had the opportunity to make these yet - my how time flies! Busy... Busy... Busy... Have any of you made them yet? They're still haunting me, waiting on my "to do" list! Would love to hear how yours have turned out - and see pics! :)

Hugs -

I made several the other week. For my swap partner. I liked the idea and had to give it a try. I liked the way it handled. But I need to make myself one so I know how they stand the test of time. And I would like to make several different sizes. But like you I am experiencing the time flying away...

Danyel! That's GREAT! I am wondering: do you notice the wax chipping away from the fabric when it's folded? Were your wraps very pliable? A friend and I were talking about them a couple of weeks ago, and she brought up these questions, so now I'm just wondering. :)

Hi Nini,
They were kind of heavy, but they did bend, I did not find that they chipped at all. And when I worked with them they felt like they would seal. So I will get in touch with my swap partner and ask her how they are working.
