I am at my parent's house in AK and wanted to start some sourdough for pancakes. They are on a well but they add potassium chloride as a softener. Will that make a difference?

When I gently suggested that Mom buy some bottled water she said no, she had her own sourdough to use! She does, but it has been frozen for several to many years.

Any experiences, suggestions?

Thanks.

I would not use the treated well water, but, I don't know if it would make any differance or not...

I also try to avoid using any treated water for anything that will be ingested.

Hope this is of help.

We have a whole house softener but I have an RO unit on my kitchen sink for drinking and cooking. We were without it for a couple of weeks and I bought distilled to use. I have never made sourdough but I think I would be hesitant to use unfiltered water.

Thanks for responding. I found bottled water in the basement left over from the moose hunt and used that.

Funny thing--on the third day, Mom mentioned that she thought Dad needed to take a shower because she was smelling something. I thought I smelled it also. It suddenly dawned on me that it might be the sourdough, so I leaned over and took a whiff. Whew!!!! It was PUNGENT!! And Dad got a reprieve. I covered the bowl with a towel and we had pancakes the next morning. I guess at 80+ degrees constantly, it sours quickly.
