Black-Eyed peas have long been a southern and Texas tradition for New Year's day, but I must confess they are not among my favorite things.
Because of MS fatigue that sets in after 12 noon I no longer do family holiday dinners. They start way to late for me.
Today I am cooking fresh black-eyed peas from the grocery store. Since I am cooking just for me I will have to eat them days after or before New Year's Day. This year I choose to eat them before and freeze a serving for Thursday.
I figure the peas need all the help they can get to be tasty so I am cooking them with ham steak, onion, celery with leaves, portabella mushrooms, garlic, tomato paste, chicken broth, and MaryJanes' Indian Flavor Blend. I like curry in black-eyed peas so the Indian Blend should work.

Sara, I'm so sorry that you suffer from MS. You are amazingly positive and joyful and never have complaining posts about anything. You are an example of the joy of loving God.
I llloooovvvveee black-eyed peas. I cook them at least once a month and serve them up with either rice or cornbread.
What is not one of my favorite things is the cooked cabbage that is supposed to be eaten with them on New Year's Day. So, instead of cooked cabbage, I serve cole slaw to keep the symbolism of prosperity. I do like me some good smothered greens, though. So, greens with onions is served up, too.

Catherine, I roast cabbage with smoked ham hock or olive oil in 425 degree oven. I think it's yummy. I have 2 heads in my fridge - one to cook - the other to ferment. This time of year it's so cheap - 4 lbs. for a $.
Thanks, for your sweet words. When I was diagnosed with MS I prayed to the Lord to grant me an extra measure of his grace so I could handle it, and he has answered my prayer way above my expectations.
For twenty years I have been able to live a contented life with no other ailments - no cold or flu. His grace has enabled me to enjoy what I can do, and find peace when I cannot do what I want.
