I have always loved barns but I really envy all of you w/ barns at Christmas. As silly as it may sound, there is something (to me) so magical, earthly and deeply spiritual about it at Christmas. When I was little and told the Christmas story every year I would imagine the animals talking to one another about the miracle of Christ being born & it's still an image I love to think about, especially on Christmas Eve.

Michele, you're right. I love going out on Christmas Eve to do chores. I love the way the horses puff their breath like little clouds, and how it makes frost on their whiskers. I like to make a nice Christmas mash out of their pelleted feed and some hot water, molasses, cinnamon, raisins, grated carrots and grated apples. They're always so surprised! Then I turn out the lights and wish them a Merry Christmas.
If the animals are going to speak at midnight (as the old story says) then I feel like an intruder, and I go quietly to the house. I give thanks before I close the barn door for the night.
When I go out for chores Christmas morning, the world is so silent. There isn't a single car on the road, and usually snow muffles every sound. I wish each one of the horses a Merry Christmas, and give them extra treats and extra hay. I know it seems crazy to say it seems cozy when it's so cold, but it really is. |

Oh mary ann you gave me chills! That sounds so amazing! We just have a metal barn for our horses and it cretainly doesn't have the same appeal. It does sond really cool when rain or snow is falling on the roof though!

My dad always told us that all the animals stood up at midnight. Always wanted to see if it was really true, but just believing is enough for me. We always gave all our animals extra grain for their Christmas present. I continue the tradition. The stories are all neat. Michele |
