I am planning on buying a few laying hens for my backyard this spring. I am going to build a chicken tractor as well as a winter (insulated) coop for when the snow falls.

anyone with city chicken experience? I would love some tips.

thanks!

so glad that you asked this question. I too plan on having a backyard "in the city" flock..all hens though as I certainly don't want angry neighbors. ..and I plan on getting some backyard geese..quiet ones though and the Pilgrims fit that bill.
Anyhow..I look forward to the answers you recieve too.

Hi Anne! Welcome to the group! I have a small flock of chickens - in the country - but here is a great resource for starting one in the city. http://home.centurytel.net/thecitychicken/
First thing to do is to check with your local zoning laws to see if they're allowed! Next thing to do is to cozy up to your neighbors. If you're going to raise them in a tractor, there shouldn't be any problem with crossing borders, etc. I love my chickens and couldn't imagine not having a few scratching around!

I have had chickens in town before (I wouldn't call the town I lived in then a city..but enough of a town that they DID have a rule..no more than 12 hens and no roosters..and if a neighbor complains they start "watching" you) I didn't have quiet chickens and didn't have perfect neighbors but it all worked for several years until I could get back out in the country. I live in a tiny town now and alot of people have chickens..roosters and all.
I hope you are able to have some..they are so much fun!

LOL! Around here, the country folk say "city chickens" are pigeons. I thought you had a bird pest problem!
