I have had cats all my life (50 plus yrs.) and was able to teach them to stay out of the tree....however my newest cat, Seabiscuit has been climbing the tree and breaking ornaments. Now we are not talking a small cat, he is a 15lber. about 18 mo. old.Anyone know of something I could put around the tree to deter him? I really don't want to put him in the basement everytime we aren't there to watch him.

thanks, TEDDIE

Hi Teddie!! Good to hear from you!! :) Try double stick tape on the tree skirt. We had a cat that like to climb on the counters and she hated how her paws stuck on the tape. Since she didn't know when it was there, she stayed off the counters for good. Good luck!

I have seen in magazines this stuff that you can put into a large planter to keep kitty from using the potty in it because they don't like to walk on it. the stuff looks like those door mats that are made of plastic that look like short grass. not astro-turf though! I will see if I can find a link online and maybe you could just get a few cheap door mats to put around it.

Seriously, another thing you can try is that clear plastic runner matting you can use to protect carpets ... arranged upside down around the base of the tree. It has little plastic pointy things on the bottom and *most* cats will avoid stepping on it.

Hi Karin,
The tape thing does work good. I taught him to stay off the dinning room table that way. However if I put it on the floor/treeskirt I might get Polly stuck in it. She is our older cat. She likes to lay under the tree and does not hurt anything by doing this. I'd hate for her to get tangled up. Maybe I could put the tape higher up on the trunk of the tree????
Cristine. I like the "prickly" mat as an idea except for Polly. However I might still use this as a backup plan. Thanks all
MERRY CHRISTMAS, Teddie

I know this is a problem, but I'am finding this very funny. A 15lb cat in the Christmas tree. Maybe you could get him a little tree of his own with cat toys as ornaments.

Teddie -

Sorry to hear your cat is climbing the tree - not sure how to stop that. We have 3 kitties. One is not that interested in the tree, however the other two like to hide under it and play with the tree skirt. So far no climbing, not that interested in that part of the tree I guess - thank goodness.

Is your tree a thick tree or are the branches out stiff and lots of space in between? I think ours don't try to climb because it is pretty thick with lower branches, making it difficult to get to the trunk.

Our kittens are in the tree too. They don't climb it but love to pull off the lights and the ornaments. I just keep using the water bottle and give them a squirt. They were drinking from the stand too until I wrapped it in aluminum foil. Cats don't like foil at all.

They don't like the smell of citrus so put some orange peels around the base and it should keep them away. It keeps them out of potted plants and flower beds! Should work for your tree too!

Love the ideas ladies! orange peel and foil may be added ,but for now I have strips of duct tape covering the lower trunk of the tree and around the tree skirt closest to the tree. My biggest concern is that the tree has sentimental ornaments on it from my and DH family trees.

NANCY JO, This is amusing, albeit annoying. My youngest son,Casey thinks it's pretty funny. He is the one who gave me custody of "his child,Seabiscuit" when he went in the Air Force. He really is a sweet kitty very loving and loves people. But he is just a big boy that tends to knock over and break things in his escapades.

Thanks again and Happy Holidays, TEDDIE

Our kitty Lucy climbs the tree every year. The first year we had some ornaments on the tree and they got broken. Now, we leave the tree bare except for some simple, non breakable ornaments and then the ornaments that we buy to remember each pet by. SOmetimes we have lights, sometimes not. With 8 kitties in the house, and 6 of those under 2 years old, having a completed decked out tree is not very safe for any of us.

I have a cute story... We used to have a really old puppy named Grandma. After Grandma passed away, we got a bell for the tree and wrote her name on it. We always put it in the highest part of the tree and every year, Lucy will climb into the tree and play with the bell. Now, since Lucy is a black kitty, you can't see her in the tree and everyone always freaks out when the bell rings. We just tell them it's Grandma wishing us a Merry Christmas!
