I have four hens. Recently, say the last two weeks or so, SOMEONE (I'm not pointing any beaks or anything) has been pooping in the laying boxes. Not every day, but maybe three or four times. The only other things I've noted is that we've had several cold snaps lately. Two of the hens roost on the roosting bar thing, the other two on the ground underneath.

Any ideas why they might be pooping in the box?

Thanks,

Kim in NC

It's cold out?

Maybe they think they are setting on eggs and don't want to leave the nests?

That's kind of what we were thinking, Erin. Not sure how to remedy that though. Husband Dear said I could have a talk with them. I don't think they will listen. If my bottom end was cold, I'd probably do the same thing.

Chickens poop, and not always where you would like them too. Some are nice clean birds and some just don't care.

Routinely cleaning out the nest boxes is part of the experience.

I don't have an issue with cleaning the nesting boxes. The question is more about that they haven't done this in the six months that I've had them and now they are. I wanted to figure out if there was something I needed to do for them, or change about their situation.:)

I have trouble with some of the hens roosting on my nesting boxes and pooping in them. I need to come up with a solution for this. I've noticed in the evening when they are settling in that some of the hens are being bullied of the roosting bars and then are going to the nesting boxes and roost on the edge. I know that it's just part of the "pecking order", but it sure does get annoying cleaning poop out of the boxes every day.

Blessings,

Missy

About the only way I have found to keep them out of the nest boxes at night is to close them off. Our nest boxes are old, and the boards in front of them fold up just for that purpose. But seeing that they are old, they don't stay up any more. So I just clean the boxes when I clean the coop. Make sure you have enough roosting room for all the hens. Good luck
