| Just introducing myself. I am an Ohio farmer's daughter who moved to New York City 23 years ago after college to pursue an acting/singing career. I have ended up with a music studio, here in NYC, where I teach singing technique to professionals. I've always been torn between choosing a life in the city and/or a life in the country. I fill the void by creating scrap quilts from vintage fabrics, making aprons and robes from vintage patterns, embroidering, creating new things out of vintage textiles; and I'm always baking and cooking the farm favorites my mother has always made, including canning pickles, relishes and jams. I collect a few vintage aprons and feedsacks. This year my Dad turned 80 and says he is going to quit farming (250 acres - corn, soy beans, wheat). I've always tried to prepare myself for this. I am sad, but am thinking of talking to my dad about possibly trying some "experiments." Just dreaming, but thinking maybe we could find a little crop, different than what he's farmed before, perhaps something like lavender, herbs, flowers, etc. Something to maybe get me back there? He's going to rent his farmland to another farmer to farm the grains, but.....anyway, that's who I am. |

Jill Welcome! So glad you are here! I do sense you are torn betwen city/country life. Sounds like you are doing wonderful things to bridge the longing you feel. I'd love to see pics of your quilts, aprons, embroidery ect. Mary Jane has chapters on just those things in her magazine and new book! There are many ideas here to explore...Hope you will be inspired! Jenny

I forgot to mention the vintage robe is fantastic. Where did you find the pattern? Mary Jane has a hot pink quilted vintage robe on in her book and magazine that is adorable. Your sewing is something to behold! I love the button wall hanging you did for your nephew. You should submit some of these pics and ideas to Mary Jane's Farm...They are that excellent!

Jill, Thank you for sharing your pics of your work and home! Wonderful. The sampler that you purchased for $22, dated 1888... I've seen those on Antiques Roadshow. They always appraise well as folkart, because they are so well done, and if they have a name on them, then so much the better!
I am also a farmersdaughter, so I know how you feel about wanting to preserve your family's farm. As I've learned within the last year or so, it can be heartbreakingly not an option in many cases. If you can work something out with your father financially to make it work... that would be wonderful!!
I am going to caution you to change your password on your snapfish account fairly soon; however. Those of regulars would never abuse the privledge, but others do read this forum and it is not safe to share personal passwords/usernames. There should be an "invite others to view" kind of thing at snapfish. You might want to investigate that option. Also, using other similar programs, there's lots of tech info on pictures in the technical support section of this website.

Oh, forgot to answer a question from Meadowlark. Vintage pattern robe pattern came from eBay. I have collected several vintage patterns from eBay from the 40's era.
I've always wanted to make one out of light greyish-blue wool with a peach-colored lining, like I've seen back in those days. |

I also love 1940's patterns, Jill, and have collected a couple bathrobe patterns from Ebay as well. Maybe we're bidding against each other? !! haha. Your sewing is beautifully done. Were you in 4-H as a kid? That was my main sewing introduction...

Thank you, Clare. No, I was not in 4-H. Home-ec probably introduced me to sewing, but I didn't have a lot of interest. At first, I think my nostalgic thoughts led me to embroidering stamped pillowcases as my grandma did. I only like to sew things because they come out of an idea that I have; in other words, I'm not much of a seamstress, but will learn to do something if it's the thing I want to make. You know, I like all those colors from the 30's and 40's - so cheerful. I like to take a white flour sack towels and edge them in 2 inch borders of 30's fabric. I also like to make pillowcases out of cheerful 30's repro fabrics.

Bathrobes are on my list, Jill, right after my vintage apron production gets going. Do you use vintage fabrics for them, or just something period appropriate? I too like the older designed fabrics.. something very comforting about them. I'm almost at the starting point for the aprons (sometime soon- like July)... I'm at the finishing stages of a denim quilt that I've been working on forever, but just made myself finish it before proceeding on to other projects. It's turning out well, I am pleased, since I have virtually no quilting experience. I will post pics of it when finished. It's one of those projects that is a labor of love and anguish at the same time. Ever have those? I've done alot of processing of (MEN!!) stuff while sewing this denim quilt. It's mainly a tribute to my roots though, for we always wore denim on the farm, in varing degrees of wear.... well, I'm sure you can relate to that.

Hi everyone!
I checked in to late and Jill had changed the password already.
But I agree with Clare it was a good idea to change your password. We just had someone steal money from our bank acct. online - not pleasant.
Anyway I was lazy and have not gone back to snapfish. Like you Jill I would like to share pics. with everyone but I'm not to computer savy. I will check out the info on this site that Clare suggested. Who knows maybe I'll understand it and be able to share pics. of all the yardage of fabric I have and the old patterns that I collect!

Oh, Clare, vintage aprons -- it's always been my desire to launch a business making vintage aprons. I've made a couple of vintage aprons with 30's repro fabric. That's the era I like (I think I already said that). For years it's been twirling around in my head -- anyway, have you noticed how darn popular they're getting. I'm going to get up the guts to wear some of them in public with a pair of jeans and a white shirt or something. Already, my friends know that when I make dinner for them I will be wearing one. Last time I had people over, I wore a vintage bright green calico. It's too big even, but I just cinch it! Please keep me posted.
Yes, I know labor of love and anguish. I'm just starting slip covers (which I've never made before) for a pair of giveaway, vintage wingback chairs. I don't want to rush through it, but need to get them done on my weekends. I am so much happier making things if I can slow down to the point where I can concentrate, relax into feeling the fabric between my fingers and just letting the project get done when it gets done.

Jill I love the way you talk about your projects. This is really in your soul! There is an article in June Country Living Mag written by Mary Jane about aprons! We all love them too! You should wear your aprons with jeans and white shirt! This sounds like a nation wide fashion trend! Farmgirl style sweeping the land! Your slipcovers sound wonderful! I am very interested in how you do this! I have an old cruddy wingback I would love to slipcover. Keep us posted on your progress! You are so accomplished!
