From time to time we are in need of the services of English to Spanish (and possibly English to Chinese) translation mostly for food packaging items. We pay a flat fee per hour and the amount of work varies from just a line or two to the entire package, depending on where it is marketed.
Our last experience with professional translators was less than satisfactory, and so I thought I would put this out there to you girls. If this is something you think you might interested in or could even refer some one, that would be helpful too.
This is not a steady job or even part time, but at (up to $35.00 depending on proficiency) an hour it's a nice little bump now and then. ;)

I'm very rusty and don't have business vocabulary but if the work is occasional and no deadline I'd love to take a stab at it, for the practice. I spent a year in Spain when I was in college and THEN I was conversationally fluent -- No practice for 20 years, though. I'd do it for the practice, but no guarantees... You'd probably get a higher-quality translation from someone more up-to-date, though.
I was just chuckling the other day reading some of the Spanish wording on a package of plastic wrap - it looked like the company had just gotten out a Spanish-English dictionary and translated the words without considering their meanings or the context. I wonder what you mean by "less than satisfied"?

Yes this is done over the net. We would just transfer the text files for translation.
We have a local inventor we occasionally do packaging design for and they have some items manufactured in china and the communications were more than a bit sticky last time. The printer over there changed all kinds of graphical elements because they couldn't understand what we wanted and their way of producing the material is so radically different. I don't need anyone for Japanese yet but if I do, I'll let you know. ;)

Unfortunately we do have rather tight deadlines for turn-around. Usually we need to get the new files to a printer for new packaging mock ups by the end of the week, so considering there is usually a round of proofing and changes as necessary we do need someone who can just be "on it". As for our satisfaction, well thats pretty much what happend. Out of a two line translation and a flat rate per hour fee, they missed 4 words entirely. I suppose I could have gotten the dictionary.. but I was afraid of looking like I'd gotten a dictionary. ;) lol But thats what the proofing rounds are for. We caught it and it was no big deal. It just seems like a silly mistake for "professionals".
Like the Tires Plus guy tonight who misread the numbers on my tires and was going to give me lower quality tires for more money. How do you misread tire numbers? Funny how after he talked to hubby I got better tires for a better price!
