Hi Farmgirls,
It is about time for me to start one of my favorite times of the holidays...cookie baking! Everyone has their own favorites. I will start with my Greek grandma’s special recipe, Koulourakia, which I make and mail to my Daddy every year. This year I’m especially grateful to be baking them for him, as he was so very sick for a long time recently.
Next will be some spritz with my vintage cookie press. I just love making those! I will also make some rosemary shortbread.
What will be going in your oven?

I am wanting to make some spritz cookies this year. My parents bought me a cookie press last year and I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I'm hoping that since my boys are older this year I will have a little help from them making cookies!

I usually make a variety pack of approximately 10-12 cookies and bars that I give out as gifts to friends and co-workers. I haven't narrowed down the cookies yet for this year, but it will include almond crescents (my personal favorite) and Grinch cookies that my daughter found on pinterest and asked me to include.

I've made and frozen lots already! Kiefflees!!!! Hungarian/Polish cookie with ground pecan filling - YUM!

I'm making my mom's Nutmeg Logs recipe for Hanukkah. I have a bunch of Hanukkah cookie cutters to try out this year. It's the most delicious, old recipe and it's a huge hit with my co-workers!

I want to make Russian tea cakes, sugar cookies, coconut macaroons, Krumkake (if I can find an electric krumkake iron). Hopefully I will have time.

I make my thin mint cookies by melting down Andes mint chips with a smidge of shortening. Then dunk butter round crackers into chocolate and lay flat to cool. It's so easy and fun for kids to help with.

Nicole, I have a vintage spritz press also! I've been hoping to bring it out for the first time in decades, now that my grandkids are 4 1/2 and 2 1/2. I know they will love it, but first I'm looking for an assistant to help manage the inevitable chaos!
Ceejay, my family has a tradition of making chocolate covered toffee with toasted almonds. But my daughter in law, with roots from Iowa, introduced us to the saltine toffee and oh my is that addictive! That is now a new must have in our family.
I love seeing everyone's traditions, especially the many ethnic cookies! What a great country we have!

Spritz cookies are definitely easy to make, and they are very pretty too. I have my mom's metal spritzer, and a new plastic one. My mom had a recipe for spritz that included Jello powder, either in red or green. They add color and flavor, but you have to be careful not to overcook them.
I think I'll be making gingerbread cookies or Thumbprint cookies. I will have to find someone to share them with, or I'll eat them all!

In two days I begin what I call my annual cookie baking marathon, 4 batches of 12 different cookies for my work, my daughters work, family and friends. We use to include my husband's work, but now that he is freelance the numbers have gone done the last 10 years, but this year's cookies will be:

Today, I made Sandbakkels which are popular Norwegian butter cookies. We have the recipe from hubby's Nana and every year they are the only requested cookie in my family. What is not to like with butter, sugar, flour and almond extract?? They are so yummy!

I made Chris Kimball's "Milk Street Cookbook" Swedish gingersnap recipe and they were delicious! The spices came through beautifully and my husband even loved them because they "weren't sweet".

So I made my koulourakia for my dad and mailed them out. We always keep some for us and Christmas Day we eat them with coffee while we open gifts. I need to make more, as we seem to have an elf who has eaten them all, as well as the rosemary shortbread trees, lol. Today I will do more baking. I am baking those two as well as holiday spritz and “cowboy cookies”. I am hosting the neighborhood “cookie exchange” this week, so I will be baking a lot! I will also make my hubby his favorite cookie which is a lot of work but I get to use my vintage double boiler so I think it makes it fun: chocolate dipped pistachio lady fingers.
Dawn, the Swedish gingersnaps sound divine and something my family would like since my hubby is Danish. Same with yours, Winnie!
Jana you sound like you were very busy! Love this post and seeing all the different varieties! Maybe next year we should do a farmgirl cookie swap...

Kelly and Krista, you can also dip Ritz crackers in the melted mint pieces. You get something like the Girl Scout thin mints.
When my grand kids were little, like Krista's boys, we made tea cakes which are rolled out and cut with cookie cutters. We worked at the table, they stood in chairs...but as we began to wind down, I would turn from the oven to find one or both little bakers sitting on the table, in the flour using the scraps of dough as if it were playdough! I would laugh, grab my camera again and record another fun memory. My favorite cookie is tea cakes, a recipe from my husband's grandmother, but I frost them with a butter icing with almond flavoring. They are so yummy!

I made some super yummy cranberry orange shortbread cookies last night! They taste just like Christmas and I can't stop eating them!
