Elizabeth- I loved looking at your pictures. Your cabin-in-the-woods turned out beautifully and I can only imagine the fun you had while there! how did you go without shoes though? I would have to be very un-Pioneer-like and at least wear flip-flops. I think my favorite picture is of the shoes and hat on the pebbles at the water's edge. It just speaks volumes about what summer should be! Thanks for sharing these.

Karin,
I tend to go without shoes for as long as I possibly can between spring and autumn, so it was just habit for me! There is nothing quite like walking to a picnic through a green field of clover in your bare feet. But we did have fairly period-appropriate shoes which we wore for our outings into the Modern World. The rest of the time, we just tried our best to stay out of the poison ivy.

Kim,
A Pioneer Week "instruction manual" is a good idea, and I've thought about it before. I just hadn't been able to come up with a format I liked. However, now that you've used the words "instruction manual", I'm growing enthusiastic about the idea again! After this coming summer's Pioneer Week I should have more fodder for such a book. We're planning to expand our activities this time to include dipping beeswax candles, using my new flatirons (I just got a set of three flatiron bases and a detachable handle at an antique show nearby!), and baking in an outdoor adobe oven. This will probably take place in July, so expect more pictures then!

P.S. I'm so delighted that you admire the Lydia Sparrow doll. I don't know if you noticed, but she is wearing a replica of the brown dress I wore for the Pioneer Week, as well as a miniature version of my apron and slat bonnet (though my sister got custody of the people-sized bonnet during our pioneer days because she fell in love with its shady-ness!).

Oh Elizabeth, those are so lovely! I'm enamoured with your cottage in the woods, I should love to have a place like that of my own one day. I love the pictures at the lake and in the gardens, you all look so feminine. Much much better than a modern summer attire of shorts and t-shirts.
Looking forward to hearing about how this summer's pioneer week will go :)

I am too, and I can't wait for you to put an Instruction Manual together. Here in the states, PBS did a program where people tried to live like the pioneers did, from starting with felling logs to build a cabin sll the way through to cooking in the cabin etc. It was interesting. Several people/families were involved. I think I'll check to see if they have it on DVD.....

Kim, that might have been a program called Frontier House. There were 3 families right? They also did one called Colonial House as well, and set it up as a 17th century colony just trying to start up. I found Colonial House interesting, not that crazy about Frontier House because there was a far superior one done in Manitoba called Pioneer Quest:A Year in the real west. There were two couples, one older, one younger that homesteaded a year as if it were 1870. If you can find that I highly recommend it! I taped it off the tv years ago and watch it whenever I feel like being a settler. If you like historical reality series, BBC produced a few really neat ones. 1900 House, 1940's House, Manor House, and Regency House Party. My fav was 1900 House where a middle class english family is transported to live in 1900, you really see what it was like to live back then. The washing, the troubles with the stove, the kids having to use their imaginations.. brilliant!

I've enjoyed watching the PBS "historical reality shows" (couldn't think of anything else to call them!), especially Colonial House, 1900 House and 1940's House. Pioneer Quest was also very interesting. I find myself constantly looking behind the people, trying to see what sort of pot they're cooking in and how their cookstove operates and what they're washing their hair with. I always want to learn more about these common, everyday things for use in future Pioneer Weeks. Or my future life.

Elizabeth, my cd finally came in the post yesterday. Yay! It was wrapped so nicely - even the sticker on the envelope was sweet. Thanks for including the info that you know about the songs, it really helps if I want to use bits and pieces to sing for programs!

I'm glad to hear the CD finally arrived, and that the information I put together about the songs was helpful. Enjoy it! I am so glad to know that you will be learning the songs and perhaps singing them where you work. That is when this music sounds best, in my mind - when one is just singing it while going about one's daily tasks. In fact, I'm planning to write a little book on that very subject, with the musical notation included. I'll get around to it sometime.

I'm just thrilled to hear that you would like to play my CD at your wedding. Yes, that's just fine with me. Thank you for asking. And congratulations, by the way! I only wish I could be there in person to sing for you. I'll email you the information I have collected about the songs, just as soon as I get home on Friday (I'm away from home at the moment).
And Meg, I wanted to thank you for asking about the song histories in the first place, which prompted me to do the research and find out a bit more about what I was singing. This was something I ought to have done sooner!

My favorite song on the CD is the very first one..makes me think of walking in the woods. I have always loved that song and was thrilled that it was included!! I listen to it often.

Kim - if only I wasn't having a Midsummer party round about June 23rd! What a nice time for a wedding.
Aunt Jenny - I'm glad you enjoy Early One Morning (if that is indeed the first song on the CD - I had to think about that for a minute!). It is a favorite song of mine as well, in part because of its association with my late grandfather, who used it as the theme song for his children's television show, The Friendly Giant. In Canada, where the show was broadcast (though my grandfather was American), people seem to immediately associate the song with this show and their childhood memories. For me it always calls to mind green valleys and springtime.

Elizabeth, when you mentioned that your grandfather was the friendly giant in the song info that you sent me, my mouth dropped open. "Wow!" I remember watching him when I was little. "Look up.. look waaaay up." What happy childhood memories.
