Happy Bockfest, everyone! Cincinnati has the oldest Bock Festival in the country, dating to the VERY German founders of the city, when Cincinnati had more taverns per capita than any city in the United States. What is Bock, you may ask? Well, it's german for goat, but it's also a lager made only to be consumed during Lent. Historically, monks fasting needed sustenance, so they brewed a high octane lager fermented with fruits and high grain content to "hold them over" during their fast. So, high octane beer and no food---must have been some HAPPY (and dizzy) monks.

Anyway, Bockfest is usually my mark on the calendar that the days are getting longer and lighter and Spring is just on my heels, like my shadow. My husband is working the "headquarters" of the festival at Arnolds, the oldest going dining/tavern in the city (1800's) where they kickoff the Bockfest Parade (they will crown a Sausage King and Queen)..I personally celebrated Bockfest by getting rid of the mutant Rose of Sharon's where my vegetable garden is going to be.
Here's the poster,

Here's the webpage if you'd like to know more about Cincinnati and its' German history...

Hi Jan--
To my knowledge, the judging was based on personality and stage presence and any other special abilities you're willing to share as a contestant....I'm fairly sure it's all tongue in cheek, but it's great fun. Luckily, the weather for the parade, where they present the sausage King and Queen, was somewhat nice this year. Windy like crazy (it IS March!) but sunny.

Wurstfest! That's a fun names, too.

Funny, I dreamt about sauerkraut all night long. Have to get me some this evening, I suppose!

What amazing timing, Jonni !!!!!!!!!
I was just thinking about Bock beer a couple of days ago! I guess a little bit of Spring weather here in California started up some really deep memory in me. Who knows?
It was just that all of a sudden I remembered going to REALLY old, old funky places in the west end & Over the Rhine (& believe me, this was 30+ years ago - way before gentrification), to get the very first of the bock beer. Talk about a "flash back!" :)
One of the things I was laughing about as I reminisced was the funny old saying:"Get moody with a Hudey." That refers to the old Hudepol beer. It was terrible beer, but the phrase always made me crack up.

I hope you had a great time this weekend........

That's great, Melanie! Actually, the Christian Moerlein company owns the Hudy name and recipe and actually brews Hudy again--kindof that cool-kid Pabst Blue Ribbon thing--it's really cool to drink not so great beer. They have a bock beer every year as well--it's pretty good. I wonder if you have the Samuel Adams Bock beer in your market? I saw it a few days ago at Kroger...maybe that would aid in memories!

Aren't you moving back this way? When??? I'd love to see some of your old haunts. You'd be amazed how downtown Cincy has changed, too.

Arnold's is still the same, though!

Okay - so when I opened this topic, I was thinking about chickens - as in "bock, bock, buh-GOCK!" type of bockfest!!! I'm LOL - this other bockfest sure does sound like fun - and that's a lovely poster, too!!!

XOXO, Libbie
