I'd love to be there for the Iditarod one year, but it's so darned cold and I'm a wuss about being cold.

I would adore being there for Iditarod some time. Awesome picure! How fun!! You have to keep us updated...it is so interesting. I love that!

That photo is so amazing - I really would like to go and see the Iditarod someday. I have a friend in Nome, and I don't know how close the race goes to there - probably not too - but, WOW, what a wonderful thing to be a part of, even as a spectator! Jo - give any of those furry ones a "good dog!" for me if you're able!

He he Libbie the race is from Anchorage TO Nome! It's based off the serum run in 1925 when Nome had a diptheria epidemic.

Oh, WOW, Holly! I had NO idea! Then I guess I could theoretically go up and stay with my friend AND see the Iditarod. This is all just too exciting -- I sure hope to some year soon!!!

You could go to the finish Libbie, I'll come with you, it's awesome!! We watched the starts all afternoon until all 83 mushers were gone. We really love the Iditarod, it comes at a time of year where we're really getting worn out from the cold........... jo

JO- That's what the story Balto is based on right? We must have watched that movie a zillion times when Z was small! We even got to visit the Balto statue in NY but I still think he ought to be in Alaska!http://www.centralparknyc.org/virtualpark/southend/balto One of his classes is going to be tracking distances daily and predicting a winner based on daily data collection. They are working on a statistical analysis spread sheet in 8th grade! I hated it in college but using the Iditarod is surely a much more fun way to learn that stuff. They even are choosing their mushers to track. Should be a fun unit! Have fun seing the real thing you lucky duck!

We were able to download a book on Balto a couple years ago and then there is a small reader version as well. The movie isn't to close to reality but it's fun! My kids love Boris.
As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!

*someday* I will make it to Alaska...hey, do you think there is any chance I could see the Iditarod and the Northern Lights on the same trip??
Then another trip in the summer so I can see Denali Nat'l Park..
Oh, I am going to read more about the Iditarod. I bet my kids would love to follow it...

Just so you guys know a bit about the mushers, Robert Sorlie is a big favorite---- he really loves his dogs, is very sweet and nice with the public. Rick Swenson has won alot, is a local as is Jeff King. I love Ramy Brooks, he is native Athabascan I believe, had a terrible problem with depression and goes around the state to talk to people. A really, really nice guy.
You can click on their names to get their bios. They're all real family people, it takes alot of resources to train and run these dogs in this race.
I believe Balto lives on through the bloodlines of our sled dogs still.

The kids have chosen to follow DeeDee Jonrowe (who we follow every year she's a Christian and a military brat!), Jessica Royer (who my Jessica has followed since we started a few years ago), Zach Steer and Dallas Seavey.
