I just had to brag on my mom some after showing you the pictures of my Amish rugs I bought.(pics on my blog) My mom also has a loom, and has made some rugs. But the most beautiful of her creations is a coverlet she made about 3 years ago. Be sure to look ladies, I'll post picture on my blog. The pattern is a very old one, I can't remember the name of it. We started out with her teaching me how to set the loom up for this coverlet. After she got started the pattern she chose was soooo captivating, she never turned loose of the beater bar again, rofl. So, she made the whooooole thing. I just love it, it is absolutely gorgeous.
My mom is very creative, she can do just about anything. She has taught me just about everything I know I guess. She teases me when I have to call on her, when I'm stuck on a pattern or whatever.
She is my best friend in the whole world, and I am so blessed to have a mother like her. She is some kind a woman!
Hey, maybe if I brag on her enough she'll give me that coverlet!!! I'm teasing mom, in case you read this.
~~Blessings, Mikki

Just beautiful...both the coverlet and the rugs!! I have a loom that has taken up a big corner of the living room since July that I STILL havn't learned to use..I will be weaving rugs on it and sure can't wait. If only I could find someone who knew how to help me with it. So far no luck. I will end up teaching myself from a book probably..thats okay too..just will take longer. I sure hope some day I can weave a 10th as well as your mom. Wow.

The coverlet looks to be an overshot pattern....did Mom weave it in one piece or in strips that were sewn together? I had a large loom that I ended up donating to a university fiber arts program. I'm now down to just two looms, smaller and more lightweight, so no more rugmaking for me!

Aunt Jenny - the book you need is called "Learning to Weave" by Debbie Chandler. It will take you step by step through the process of choice of material, winding your warp, dressing the loom, and the actual weaving. It's how I started and will answer many of your questions.

I've tried to find a suitable exercise video for women my age...but they haven't made one called "Buns of Putty"

The coverlet your mom made is exquisite! Wow, what a talent! The rugs are beautiful. It sounds like you had such a lovely day with your Amish friends.

My mother learned from a book too Jenny. Sandy, the coverlet is two pieces. On her website she showed how she joined the two together and done a lovely job. I believe your right about the overshot. I do remember it was an older pattern.
