I found some interesting/ALARMING facts and posted them on my blog. I will NEVER drink from a styrofoam cup again!!!!

Wow!! I am happy that we don't use alot of disposable stuff but man....it is amazing when you see statistics like that!!! I want to try even harder.

I can't even comprehend a million years for EACH and EVERY single styrofoam cup! And I've been stopping for a cup of coffee four days a week for months now. Ok, so I need to either find a refillable cup or just make coffee when I get to work and use china cups.

Bringing your own coffee cup is awesome! Where I work they use styrofoam cups and plates and plastic 'silverware' ALOT. I make a point to ask for a real plate/bowl etc. I've done this so often that when they see me coming they say "oh, you want a regular plate". Then I remind them how bad styro and plastic is. I will get the message out and across if I have to do it one person at a time. Everyone join in and help!!!!!!!

I know this is probably going to sound silly, but on Earth Day, 1990, when I was young and idealisic, I signed a petition at my "hippy" boarding school, to personally not use styrofoam, purchase styrofoam etc...and with only a couple very great exceptions, I haven't completely failed at my vow.
In fact, I think about signing that petition every time I see styrofoam!

Sarah - I've wanted to ask you this several times, but I keep forgetting. I so much admire the quote from the Great Law of the Iroquois Confederacy that you use. I've tried to Google and find the entire thing so I can read it all, but to no avail. Do you know of any place/website where I can find the entire document? It's one of the most profoundly wise statements I've ever read.

Janice...to be honest I got it from a Seventh Generation product. I've found the Iroquios Constitution. I don't have time right now to go over it thoroughly to see if the actual quote is there ( I should have checked the authenticity of it before hand). Sarah, WHAT A SITE, thank you so much. Your 100% correct in my opinion, the native americans were the best stewards of this land ever. We can learn alot if we'd just listen & learn. I'm so sick of the use it, abuse it & throw it away attitude we have come to know so well. Im going to give that site to everyone in my address book. Thanks.

Wow...I didn't know there was so much waste. I always store those bags I get from the grocery store because I'm afraid to throw them into the trash. My store never gets paper in and when I ask the tell me they don't have any. Well I just ordered reusable grocery sacks from a site that you had on your blog. I ended up at www.reusablebags.com and ended up buying these great alternatives to grocery bags. They were cheap at only $8.50 a bag and I'll use them forever and never have to get another plastic bag. They were called pack-n-tote grocery cart helper bags. I'm so glad I went to your blog.

I know your quote is in there, because one of my best friends teaches history and she knew just what I was talking about. I usually buy throw away cups and plates due to the amount of people in my house and I am the only one out of 9 people that knows how to wash dishes...but that is stopping now. I did not know all of these facts. I will now take that money and buy dish liquid...lol

Urban Chick I am so glad you visited me. At reusablebags they have a sticker that says ...plastic bags blow- byob bring your own bag.... That got me to thinking. We will see things many times and become oblivious to them. So I started paying attention to how many of those plasic store bags that I see as litter and blowing in the wind. I see at least 5 everytime I go somewhere. Where do those end up? Many in the oceans and on the beaches. Or they land it trees for all of us to enjoy. So it makes my heart exceedling glad to see someone switching to reusable bags. I find that the bags I orignally bought for shopping I use for a number of things.
Paper bags are not better to use than plastic either, I used to think they were. It takes four times more energy to make a paper bag than a plastic one. It takes an enornmous amount of cut trees to make paper bags which worsens the global warming problem as trees absorb greenhouse gases. Paper bags do not degrade faster than plastic in landfills. Nothing completely decomposes in landfills due to the lack of air, water, oxygen and light. (YUK!) Reusablebags.com has more great info about this.

We just came back from a beautiful trip to Ireland, our four children gave us for our 25 anniversary! But one thing I noticed while over their is that they are much more into recycling than we are. They have large containers for trash at commerical businesses that are labeled for each recycling group, and at the grocery they charge you for each and every plastic bag you need .45 cents each. Maybe that is why is it such a clean and beautiful country. I think that we as Americans can learn a lot form older countries.

Fawn...the motto at my house is if you're gonna eat you're gonna clean up. lol I'm glad to see you're opting not to buy the throw away things anymore. Washing dishes also makes for great 'alone' time to talk with others.
Georgia..Americans do have alot to learn, we are so spoiled in this country. There are places that are also taxing the use of plastic bags. Seems the way to get most peoples attention, not all, is thru the wallet.
