I dreamed of so many things... I wanted to be a farmer of some sort- growing vegetable and flowers, having rabbits, 2 dogs, several cats and a barn
I wanted to wear overalls and flip flops (yes- I would not be a conventional farmer) and buy an old beater truck to drive around in.
I wanted long hours to read and cross stitch, walk, swim and bike...
Simple little house with really comfortable furniture. (Don't know where that came from.. )
If I had to have a traditional career, I would be a medical secretary. They were always nice and friendly when we went to the office for an appointment.
I would have loved to live right next to the ocean and do all this but never have seen a farm next to one. But I still dream!!!!
Funny thing is, I am a lot of these things now and am headed for more of them....goes to show I think we all really know what we want to do but life distracts us. |

I wanted to be Olivia Walton. But with even more animals. I do have her front porch on the front of my farmhouse now(downloaded a photo last summer and handed it to talented carpenters - LOL).

| I wanted to be a mom and a teacher. I am now, somewhat, just that. I'm a youth minister for a terrific group of high school kids! Funny thing is that I'm only about 7 years older than most of them and they are (literally) all taller than me! Yikes! |

I wanted to be a special education teacher and a mom. I never did finish college, but I have realized both of my dreams. I am a mom to three beautiful kids and with the birth of our second child, entered into the world of teaching a very special child. DS is deaf and has cerebral palsy and a siezure condition. It actually sounds a lot worse that it really is, but we have our challenges. So, while it is not with a college education behind me, I get to teach my son from the heart. I don't think I would ever want to trade for the other.

I wanted to be an a person that renovates old historic buildings. I decided not to go into architecture in college because the program was very intense and I knew I didn't have the brains or discipline. I also wanted to be a mom of four and I got my desire.

Aside from the fact that I wanted to be just like Laura Ingalls, I wanted to be a wife, mom, have horses, and own a retail store offering home decor and flowers. I'm doing all of it minus an actual building. God is good!
Really though, I'd love to have my garden published in a great magazine and secretly I'd like to replace Martha Stewart in a "down to earth" way. Oh, I think that Mary Jane Butters already did that! Ann http://annforrester.tohe.com |

I wanted to be an attorney for the ACLU or for Deaf people. I went so far as to take the LSAT, which I passed with flying colors, and I know ASL, but I lost the desire. I fell in love with other things and other ways to help people. Now and again I get a phone call to come interpret at the courthouse, or the jail, or the chamber or the WIC office....it doesn't happen a lot, but it does happen, so I stil get to use it. Taking the LSAT and doing all of that learning has helped me in MORE ways than I can even express. My knowledge of the court system and legalese and such has helped me out big time. Once a group of people who thought they were going to screw me over didn't realize who they were dealing with....needless to say, the judge laughed them and their frivolous lawsuit out of the courtroom....
I also wanted to be a writer, which I suppose I am, though I haven't published anything. I write for myself mostly, so it really matters not to me if I publish anything.
I live the life I want to live. If I don't like something, I change it. Though I am not an ACLU lawyer or for the Deaf, or a "writer", I am so happy and content with my life.

I always wanted to be a grade school teacher and a writer and live in the big city. Well, I live in the big city now and do my fair share of writing, but I abandoned the teacher notion-- it's just not where my heart is. So right now I'm an office gnome (in the middle of wage war) and trying to get into organic farming (apprenticing part time this summer). I'm really excited about transitioning into organic farming, and both the husband and I are starting to get on the same page about leaving the city, so life is good. And I FINALLY graduate in June!

Katrina, Glad you went first! I too wanted to act, sing and dance. I guess I could still do community theatre, if we had one.
Later on, though, I wanted to be a homemaker and write some. More than anything, I would love to stay home and tend the house and garden and do my sewing, crafting and cooking. I am happy, though, and fit my loves in when I'm not working my office job or going to school at night.

I wanted to be an actress in musical theatre. Then I discovered the lonnnggg hours, late nights, and little pay, and decided I could use those skills in other careers instead
At other times I wanted to: Run my own little tea shop Be a theatre director A writer (I'm working on it!) And of course, my very secret desire was to be a homekeeper (aka. domestic goddess) so I could cook, bake, sew, clean, read, and garden to my heart's content.

Amish (and I'm not kidding!) I thought it just seemed like all of my favorite things in one lifestyle. But I am far to outspoken and opinionated to have been one for long. And they don't educate women beyond 6th or 8th grade depending on the order. I don't do subservient very well! So, reality check- I went to school for Horticulture and Landscape Architecture and worked in those fields for many years. After having children that little voice in the back of my head kept saying "Didn't you want to be a teacher too?" So after going back to school I have an ability to be a reading specialist or an Art teacher! I have done both and love it! The world is always full of surprises if you just keep the door open to new possibilities! For anyone who thinks it's too late...There was an 83 year old woman in my last graduating class who went back to college just because she wanted to satisfy herself with knowing she had furthered her education and completed her goal. Needless to say...she got a standing ovation and was one cool Granny! Sometimes we think we have given up on our dreams, but in reality they have taken on new form and meaning. Sometimes different is better! I didn't expect at 46 to be raising a 13 year old and have a 7 week old baby join our family. There are surprises around every corner! And sometimes they sneak up on you and steal your heart...be open to the possibilities! Make new dreams if the old ones have faded and take steps to make them happen! Dream outloud and live your best life, I'm sure trying!
with a happy heart |

I wanted to be a nurse and a mother when I was younger. I was a certified nurses assistant in high school and went to nursing school for awhile but due to life circumstances had to drop out. Now I wish I could be a counselor.........I just havent got the nerve or the money to go back to school to do that. I have thought about selling real estate but you have to already have a job in a real estate agency so that you can do training under someone with a license.
I love the job I have now (911 dispatcher/jailer) but I am looking for something closer to the "farm". Hubby would like it if I didnt have to drive so far especially in the wintertime.

You guys have such uplifting ideals.....When I was little I wanted to be a hermit and live in a cabin in the wood. I had to have a fireplace too. All I figured I need was a horse, a dog and one wall of the cabin made into bookshelves and full of books. After I discoverd boys my tune changed a little....I married raised four beautiful daughters, always had a horse and dog and now I live almost in the wood and take care of a cranky old man. It almost worked. MB

I wanted to be an artist. I used to draw all of the time. My life has taken many twists and distractions but in a lot of ways, I still achieved my initial goal. Now I create with cakes, food, retail merchandise, through writing and crafts. Its all how you look at it, I guess.

| For a long time, I wanted to be a surgeon. Then I switched majors in college (to English Literature!), graduated and dabbled in several different jobs, including a stint teaching English in South America (after getting my master's), and am now an English teacher and writer (for myself more than anything). It's funny where life takes you... |

What I wanted more than anything was to be a wife and mother.....and have a horse. Well, I raised two beautiful children...who are now discovering their own dreams. My husband is my most precious friend. Now at age (almost) 50 I have a horse and a farm and I bake apple pies with my own home-picked apples, and blueberry buckle with my own blueberries and for breakfast I can eat eggs from the chickens that we have raised from peeps......life is wonderful!

First, What a NEAT topic!! Thank you for starting it! I have enjoyed reading everyones response so much!
For me, I told everyone when I was four that I was going to have two boys and two girls and some of them would be twins, be a missionary nurse and marry a wonderful man. They all laughed and thought I was too cute but I did go to nursing school (had to drop out 3 classes before my RN due to health, but I plan to go back again and get my RN! I LOVED it!), I was a missionary, and I do have two boys and two girls and the girls are twins sooo I didnt do to bad! Also my first attempt at a husband did not work but the second one seems to be a keeper thank goodness for that!
Of course as I travel and see more in life I have grown more interests and more dreams have grown. I want to travel the world, write, get my degree in nursing, interior design, special ed, and Home Ec, reopen my store, own a few other bussinesses, have my farmette (this is a must have for me!), and learn and expierence all I can! I don't know if I will fullfill all my dreams, but dreams are so important to me because they give reason and wings to my life. So weather they just help me live my life to its fulest and put smiles on my face, or if they actually all come true so I can fashion new ones, it does not matter to me, either way I will always dream and live! And on day when I am all grown up (around 120 or so) you all can ask me if I got to be what I wanted to be when I grew up!
Here is to all dreams and goals that are good comming true for us all!
Hugz! Talitha
