I had meant to post photos each Advent Sunday.. and Duh! I managed to get side track..
So here is last Sunday's Advent wreath and todays as well

I went out and clipped some branches from our Spruce tree..
Then after dinner we lite the 1st candle and gave Thanks for our Blessings.

Now here it is, Dec. 6th, the second Advent Sunday..

I have made all sorts of Advent Wreaths... but decided to make a simple one this year..
My Oma,, use to make her wreaths like this,, some fresh branches were cut each Sunday and the candles placed in them.. She said, it was safer to use fresh cut branches rather than the week old dried out ones, to prevent a fire.

So this morning,, I went out and brought my candles and matches and placed fresh cuttings on the tray..
It was very lovely and we once again gave thanks for our blessings.. and as we did, I could hear all the Quail hiding in amongst the spruce trees,, watching us,, so we gave thanks for the inquisitive quail too!
Happy Advent Sunday.

Beautiful Advent wreath, Grace!! I love simple too, especially for Advent. Do they celebrate Advent in Germany these days? If so, do they use those lovely candle rings they make for other occasions like birthdays?

Winnie, yes most families use the wooden rings, some are also hanging type.
With the Christmas markets closed this year due to the pandemic,, Germany has a lock down on the out door markets.
So sadly, no shopping for ornaments and advent wreaths... no fresh pasteries and no Gluhwein...

I have a wooden ring, but I only use it for birthdays.. when I remember... mine is actually 2 rings, an otter one that has 4 candle slots and a smaller separate inner ring that holds only one candle.

I also have 2 wooden 'pyramids' .. but I did not bring them out this year,, I don't trust my cat to not make it her personal play toy! lol!

That is beautiful Grace! I’m not familiar with advent. Do you light one candle each Sunday.

Yes, Krista,, it is a time for family, prayer and to reflect on our Blessings... I think it's predominantly a European thing,,, not sure if they do it in England.
Some are very simple in style, a log with 4 holes drilled in it,, or branches with candles nestled in,, wooden rings with holes dut in the.. some are placed around the table,, or on a window ledge and some are hung from the ceiling..

Beautiful. I love the simplicity of it Grace. I'm not familiar with it either but I think it's very fitting for this year to count our blessings!

What's Gluhwein?

Heather,, Gluhwein is a mulled/spiced warmed wine.. It is a festive drink during the Winter months..
Warmed/hot but don't boil,, red wine,,,, add spices of nutmeg, allspice, ginger, clove.. let simmer and then drop in a thin slice of orange just before serving..
Oh Yummmm! or as we say,, "Lecker".....

I had something like that a few years ago. I don't think there was orange slices though. It wasn't terrible but I prefer my wine cold LOL! I do love hot spiced apple cider though!

Do you have a favorite traditional German cookie? My husband is always telling me to find traditional European recipes to try.

Krista,,, hurry... :>)

Heather,, if it is prepared right,, it relly is yummy...

It's part of the festivities in Germany. to stroll around the Christmas market.. peel at the hand made goods in teh little stalls, while sipping this scented yummy warm wine and nibbling on a piece of Lebkuchen (sort of like ginger bread).. listening to the music and ahhing at the festive lights.

In some cities it is called the KristKringle fest, Weihnachts markt, and in some areas, Angelika-fest, or fest of the Angels.
But alas,, this year, there will be no fests due to COVID-19 :>(
My family, and both my friends, in Meimsheim and in Berlin are so disappointed... as would I be if I were there now.

loosely translated: Take your time, drink Gluhwein, and reflect.
Trader Joes and Cost Plus/World Market sell premade bottles of Gluhwein, $8 =/-
Gently simmer and add thin slices of an orange.

I saw a show one time featuring an outdoor Christmas market in Germany and it's been on my to do list ever since. I bet there are a lot of people very disappointed about no fests this year. It sounds like so much fun!!!

Do you have a recipe for the Lebkuchen? I'd love to try to make some. My family has German roots but I'm afraid the only tradition that was passed on was the kraut eating and beer drinking LOL!!

Oh Heather,, thank goodness for the Kraut , Brats & Beer! lol!
(are you still at ' 11965 ' ?? I will mail you the recipes....
************************
To make the true authentic Lebkuchen,,, also you need 'rose water' and 'pottasch'... which you might be able to find at a German import store or pharmacy store.

Also, after you make the dough, you have to let it "ripen/rest'' for a couple of days in a dark storage (like in a brown paper sack in a cupboard).. with some ricipes you can refridgerate the dough.

But there are Americanized versions..
I have only once made them, because it is a lot of work, and a day or 2 for letting the dough rest,, plus it gets a bit expensive to have to buy all the ingredients if you do not normally stock up on them.

I am going to mail the recipe to you.

Yup, Still there. I definitely don't have rose water and pottasch (not even sure what that is LOL!) in the pantry. I may have to Americanize the recipe this year. But I will treasure the recipe you send and will one day make the authentic version. Thank you so much for sending it. I greatly appreciate it - and my husband will too!
